Shootout Swings to Thunder
November 13, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Tarek Baker converted the only chance during a seven-round shootout, nudging the Bloomington Thunder past the Waterloo Black Hawks, 3-2, on Friday at Young Arena.
Baker scored on a low shot inside the post to the right of Hawks netminder Cale Morris after six shooters from each team had been turned away. Hayden Lavigne made a final save on the Black Hawks' last chance, attempted by Kevin Charyszyn.
The Thunder had been responsible for all of the first period offense within a two-minute span. On a power play at 5:21, Jeremy Davies put in a sharp-angled chance to the right of Morris. A wraparound to the same post at 7:17 by Jake Durflinger made the score 2-0.
The Black Hawks broke through with a power play goal in the second. After Michael Davies set up a Yuri Terao one-timer which was turned away, the Hawks tried the same combination in reverse order. Terao put the puck on a tee, and Davies blasted it into the net from the high slot at 13:39.
Waterloo tied it at 11:14 of the third period on an unlikely goal. Corralling the puck in the left wing corner, Nick Swaney sent a shot parallel to the goal line, which bounced off of defenseman Butrus Ghafari and past Hayden Lavigne.
The Hawks are on home ice again Saturday against the league-leading Lincoln Stars. It's a college weekend, so tickets are just $8 for students with a valid ID. After the game, Waterloo's patriotic jerseys will be auctioned, with profits benefitting the Sullivan-Hartogh-Davis Post 730 Honor Flight.
