Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants clobbered the Wichita Wingnuts Thursday night, 16-4, to win the rubber game of a three-game series and give manager Steve Shirley his 200th coaching win.
Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Pheasants rallied for five runs, four of which came with two outs. Hunter Jobes provided the game-tying, RBI single off reliever Doug Hurn, and Trevor Lawhorn drove in the winning run with a run-scoring double.
Shirley is in his fourth consecutive season as manager of the Sioux Falls Pheasants. He led the Sioux City Explorers for a partial season in 2005 and has a lifetime record of 200-172. He is second all-time in Sioux Falls franchise wins with 167. Doc Edwards (2000-2004) has the most victories in team history with 200.
Wingnuts starter Ben Graham made his first professional start and had a respectable outing. He threw for 5 2/3 innings and yielded three runs on four hits. He was replaced with two outs and two runs in during the sixth inning for Hurn, when the Pheasants tallied three more runs.
The Pheasants poured on gravy in seventh and eighth innings, scoring 10 more runs. Lawhorn homered for the second consecutive game. Brandon Sing blasted a grand slam in the eighth, his seventh home run of the year and the team's fourth grand slam this season. Lawhorn finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, and Sing went 3-for-4 with six RBI.
Beau Torbert's only hit was a three-run double in the seventh that extended his hitting streak to 12. It was the third consecutive game where Torbert drove in runners with the bases loaded.
Pheasants starter Ryan Rodriguez (3-0) pitched well enough for the win. He gave up eleven hits in six innings, but he allowed just four runs. He walked two and struck out two.
Hurn (1-2) took the loss for Wichita.
The Pheasants open a three-game series at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, June 4, at Sioux Falls Stadium. It's a Fantastic Friday Fireworks night, presented by Sanford Health.
