Captains & African-American Chamber Celebrate Negro League Baseball

Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release


SHREVEPORT, La. - The Shreveport-Bossier Captains and the Shreveport-Bossier African-American Chamber of Commerce (SBAACC) celebrate Negro League Baseball in a special tribute to be held on Saturday, June 5, during the Captains' game at Fair Grounds Field against the St. Paul Saints. First pitch of the game is 7:05 p.m. The game is in honor of the many Pelican State players who played during the Negro Leagues period. The African-American Chamber joining with the Captains in supporting this great effort and to help raise funds for the SPAR children's summer baseball league programs. Some great Louisiana players from the many Negro League baseball teams, including Wendel Antoine, Riley Stewart and others along the Captains and Saints will wear period uniforms of Negro League teams.

There will also be a special guest invited from Dallas, Mr. William "Bill" Blair, Jr. a former Negro League baseball player who pitched for the Indianapolis Clowns from 1946-51, as well as other Negro League teams. Joining Mr. Blair will be Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover, Bishop Larry L. Brandon, Booker White, Chairman of the African-American Chamber and many other special guests.

Partnering with the Captains and the African-American Chamber is Coors Light, along with Cumulus Radio stations 99.7 KMJJ and Magic 102.9.

Brochures will be available at the game providing information on the many Louisiana Negro Leaguers, such as Willard "Home Run" Brown, whose career began with the Monroe Monarchs and later with the Kansas City Monarchs ending with his induction to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., in July 2006. We hope to share with you and your family this legacy in the history of African-American baseball and encourage you to learn more about this important piece of America's National Pastime.

The Shreveport-Bossier Captains conclude their three-game series with the El Paso Diablos on Thursday, June 3, at 8:05 p.m. Central Time, before returning home on Friday, June 4, to face St. Paul Saints for three, with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. The evening features a special tribute to the late Justin Bloxom in "We Care about our Kids Night" sponsored by GAP Broadcasting. A portion of all tickets sold for the game will be donated to Sheriff's Safety Town. All games are broadcast on ESPN Radio, KRMD-1340 AM as well as streaming live on supertalk1340.com.
