St. Paul Saints News Release
PENSACOLA, FL (June 3, 2010) - If the St. Paul Saints take two out of three during each series on their roadtrip they will consider it a success, but the 5-4 loss to the Pensacola Pelicans at Jim Spooner Field at Pelican Park on Thursday still stings.
With the Saints trailing 4-3 in the eighth they were able to tie it up when Jason Cooper was hit by a pitch, who's 12 game hitting streak came to an end, moved to second on a walk to Brent Krause and scored on Gerard Haran's double to left. Haran went 4-4 on the evening with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.
In the top of the ninth the Saints got the lead off man aboard when Steve Mays walked, but Steve Butler's sacrifice bunt went into the air and was caught by first baseman Javier Brito. Andrew Schmiesing, who entered the game in the seventh for an injured Coby Smith, singled to right-center which moved Mays to second. Josh Alley popped out and Ole Shedon grounded out, however, to end the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth the Pelicans cashed in on their lead off walk. Saints reliever Joe D'Alessandro, who was great in his first 2.0 innings of relief, walked Dallas Christison. He stole second and Francisco Leandro's sacrifice bunt turned into a bunt single that moved Christison to third. After Leandro moved to second on defensive indifference, the Saints intentionally walked Adolfo Gonzalez to load the bases. Antoin Gray then dumped a broken bat single into left for the game winner.
The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the second when Krause singled and moved to third on Haran's single. Brandon Carter's sacrifice fly score Krause.
The Pelicans came right back with three in the bottom of the second. Six consecutive hitters reached on a walk, a hit batter and four singles, which plated three runs giving the Pelicans a 3-1 lead.
In the fourth the Saints cut the deficit to 3-2 when Krause singled, Haran singled him to third and Krause scored on Carter's single.
With the Saints trailing 4-2 in the seventh Haran doubled and scored on Carter's double. He finished the night 2-2 with a double and three RBI.
The Saints now head to Fair Grounds Field to take on the Shreveport-Bossier Captains at 7:05 p.m. on Friday. The Saints send RHP Jake Schmidt (2-1, 2.18) to the mound against Captains RHP Osvaldo Rodriguez (4-0, 3.86). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
