Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
EL PASO, Texas - After allowing a walk and two singles in the first inning Thursday night, Shreveport-Bossier Captains pitcher Richard Salazar looked like he might become the third starting pitcher in three games to give up a big first inning, after the Captains scored five on Tuesday and the El Paso Diablos scored six in the first inning on Wednesday. But the lefty got Matt Imwalle to ground out to second, starting a streak of 14 straight batters retired, and he got two two-run homers by Christopher Garcia and Bryan Frichter to help his cause as the Captains took the rubber match of a three-game series 8-1.
The lefty (2-0) ended up going seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits, with two walks and five strikeouts. After the first inning, he did not have a runner on until Jonathan Reynoso singled with one out in the sixth. After another hit and a sacrifice fly, Salazar walked Byron Smith, but got Imwalle to pop out to keep the Diablos at one run. He then gave up a leadoff double in the seventh, but got a groundout, strikeout and popout to get out of trouble.
Amad Stephens (1-3) started for El Paso (5-14) and stranded a baserunner in each of the first two innings. But in the third, after giving up a hit and getting two outs, Stephens allowed Garcia to launch his fourth homer of the year, a two-run shot to left-center to put the Captains (11-9) on the board. After Palmer Karr reached out and poked a single to center, Frichter hit his third bomb of the year to nearly the same spot as Garcia's to make it 4-0.
Shreveport-Bossier got another run in the fourth on an RBI double by Brian Peterson to score Uriak Marquez from first, but Stephens settled in after that, retiring 10 of his final 11 hitters. Righty Nick Renault came on in the eighth, and was promptly greeted with a bunt single by Frichter. Two walks, a strikeout, an error and a run later, Bryan Sabatella walked on a 3-1 pitch to force in the seventh run of the night.
Jameson Maj pitched around a leadoff walk in the eighth, and birthday boy Cody Railsback gave up a leadoff single but nothing more in the ninth to seal the Captains' second straight series win.
Notes: The Captains had double-digit hits (12) for the fifth straight game...Salazar has gone exactly seven innings in each of his four starts...Jorge Alvarez was hit by a grounder in the finger on Wednesday, and missed his first game of the season while the swelling went down. Joe Urtuzuastegui started at third base, and Marquez started at second, making two great defensive plays in the game...Sabatella has multiple hits in six straight games...The first five hitters in the Captains lineup went 11-for-24...Railsback turned 23 on Thursday.
The Shreveport-Bossier Captains return home on Friday, June 4, to face St. Paul Saints for three game, with first pitch on Friday at 7:05 p.m. The evening features a special tribute to the late Justin Bloxom in "We Care about our Kids Night" sponsored by GAP Broadcasting. A portion of all tickets sold for the game will be donated to Sheriff's Safety Town. All games are broadcast on ESPN Radio, KRMD-1340 AM as well as streaming live on supertalk1340.com.
