Sharks Get Clipped 2-1 in Manchester

MANCHESTER, NH - Sharks rookie forward James Marcou scored late in the third period but it wasn't enough as the Sharks fell 2-1 in Manchester on Sunday afternoon at the Verizon Wireless arena.

Alex Stalock made 34 saves and stopped Corey Elkins on a penalty shot in the third period but the Sharks dropped their third straight game (0-2-1-0) and their 4th straight to the Manchester Monarchs in a physical contest.

Neither team would score in a fiesty first period that saw plenty of good checks and a few bouts. Sharks forward Eric Lizon picked up his first fight in the AHL with a heavy weight bout with Justin Johnson at 3:39. The Monarchs outshot Worcester 12-11 as Alex Stalock and Martin Jones pitched shutouts in the first period.

21 mores shots were fired in the middle frame but neither team would find the back of the net. The two clubs headed into the 2nd intermission scoreless after 40 minutes.

Alex Stalock stopped Corey Elkins on a penalty shot at 2:47 to start the third period to keep the game scoreless. Manchester got on the board at 4:21 as Viatcheslav Voynov (5th) ripped a shot from the point through a screen in front and past Stalock on the power play. The Monarchs went ahead 2-0 at 16:46 when Brandon Kozun (8th) deflected a shot from the right wall past Stalock and into the net. James Marcou's (5th) shot from the left wall found its way through a maze of players and past Martin Jones at 16:45 to get the Sharks within one. Alex Stalock denied Andrei Loktionov on a breakaway soon after to keep the score 2-1 but the Sharks could find the back of the net again.

The Sharks record falls to 15-10-2-4 with 36 points and to 7-6-1-3 away from the DCU Center.

Martin Jones made 29 saves on 30 shots for Manchester; Alex Stalock made 34 saves on 36 shots for Worcester...Worcester went 0-for-4 on the power play while Manchester went 1-for-4... Tony Lucia, Jonathan Cheechoo, Mike Moore, and Frazer McLaren did not dress for the Sharks.... Worcester fell to 7-2-0-0 on Sunday afternoon games this season... Nick Petrecki fought Dwight King in the 3rd period and picked up a ten minute misconduct in the 2nd... Jay Leach and Steve Zalewski each chipped in with an assist... the goal by Marcou was his first even strength goal this season.
