Cleveland Barons News Release
CLEVELAND - San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has assigned defenseman Garrett Stafford, center Grant Stevenson, and goalie Jamie Holden to the Cleveland Barons.
Stafford, an AHL All-Rookie Team member during the 2003-04 season, returns to Cleveland for his third year of professional play. Last year the 25-year old blue liner compiled six goals and 18 assists. His 24 points and 18 assists ranked him third among all Barons defensemen and his six goals found him tied for third. He led league defensemen with 10 shootout opportunities, cashing-in on four of them for a 40% conversion rate, the third best among AHL defensemen. Along with his All-Rookie Team honors, Stafford was named to the Planet USA All-Star team at the AHL's mid-season classic and earned post-season AHL 2nd Team All-Star recognition. During that season the Los Angeles native led all Barons defensemen in goals (12), assists (34), points (46) and shots (150). His 46 points were also 6th among AHL defensemen.
Stevenson picked up the pace at the end of the 2004-05 season, delivering 67% of his 39 points in the last 38 games. On the season, Stevenson recorded a career-high 14 goals with 25 assists for 39 points in 77 games. The 25 assists were third on the Barons.
Holden reports to camp after playing 34 games last season for Quinnipiac College, going 20-11-3. He set a new school single season record with 899 saves and finished the season with a 2.55 goals-against-average and .915 save percentage.
The Barons will open their 2005-06 Regular Season schedule on the National City Rink located in Gund Arena on Saturday, October 8th against the Rochester Americans at 7:05pm. Tickets for all regular season games are on sale now at the Gund Arena Box Office, Ticketmaster outlets and on-line at the Barons official website.
