
Phantoms Give Fans Opportunity to Sip from the Calder Cup

PHILADELPHIA - The Calder Cup Champion Philadelphia Phantoms today announced a schedule of events for the American Hockey League's (AHL) championship trophy. Lunch with the Cup will precede a 10-day Sip from the Cup tour, leading directly up to the Phantoms 10th Anniversary Opening Night on Sat., Oct. 8 at the Wachovia Center.
Sip from the Cup will give fans a rare chance to enjoy the same spoils as the Phantoms players. Through a drawing at each location, on the day of the Sip from the Cup appearance, one person will be selected to drink Pepsi from the Cup. Along with the taste of victory, winners will be given two tickets to opening night and will receive a special photo commemorating the event. The campaign kicks off Wed., Sept. 28 at 11:00 a.m. at LOVE Park. The following day, the Phantoms will offer a sip from the 67-year old trophy prior to their 1:35 p.m. exhibition at Sovereign Bank Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ. Other appearances include area restaurants, universities, radio stations and will conclude at an elementary school. Fans who attend the Sip from the Cup event will receive free Pepsi and have a chance to win prizes. An entire schedule is listed below.
Lunch with the Cup will precede the Sip tour. It all begins with a stop at Vito's Pizza in Cherry Hill on Mon., Sept. 26. The following day, Reading Terminal Market will host the AHL's top prize in the center seating Area. Beginning at 11:30 p.m., the Cup will be on location for approximately two hours.

Calder Cup Fast Facts:
* The trophy is named for Frank Calder, who served as the National Hockey League's first President from 1917 to 1943. During the 1920's, he was instrumental in the formation of the American League.
* The Cup weighs 45 pounds and stands 23 1/2 inches high. By comparison, the Stanley Cup tips the scales at 35 pounds and stands just under three feet.
* Phantoms Coach John Stevens has won the Cup three times as a player, and once as a head coach. He played for the 1987-88 Hershey Bears, the 1990-91 Springfield Indians, the 1997-98 Phantoms, and of course guided the 2004-05 Championship squad.
* The Philadelphia Flyers' affiliate has captured the Calder Cup five times. The Maine Mariners won back to back in 1977-78 and 1978-79. The Hershey Bears were victorious in 1987-88, while the Phantoms captured the Cup in 1997-98 and 2004-05
