EVANSVILLE, IN - Nolan Shaffer combined with two relievers for a shutout as the Traverse City Beach Bums beat the Evansville Otters in front of 1,317 fans at Bosse Field by a score of 5-0.

Shaffer, who lost to the Otters in his last start, pitched six scoreless innings allowing only six hits while striking out three. Relievers Jeff Cinadr and Scott Mueller came on to work three scoreless innings and finish the second shutout the Beach Bums have thrown in the past three games.

The Beach Bums opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI-triple from third baseman Jose Vargas. In the third, left fielder J.T. Hall launched a solo home run to right field to give the Beach Bums a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth, new Beach Bums catcher Chris Kay lined a two-out single up the middle to score first baseman Jeff Flagg and give the Beach Bums a 3-0 lead. The Beach Bums would add a pair of runs in the seventh against Otters reliever Dan Marcacci when right fielder Matt Brown drove in two runs with a single.

The six scoreless innings Shaffer (4-2) threw earned him his fourth win of the season. Otters starting pitcher Kyle Eastham (0-1) allowed three runs in six innings in picking up his first loss of 2011. The Beach Bums improve to 22-22 with the win, while Evansville falls to 12-32 with the loss. Kay led the Beach Bums with two hits in the ballgame.
