Rascals Comeback Behind King Joash

River City Rascals News Release


O'Fallon, Mo. - The Rascals' scoreless innings streak reached 19 in the fifth while the WildThings built a 5-0 lead, but River City scored seven unanswered runs, four clubbed in by Joash Brodin, and avoided their first consecutive losses since mid June in a 7-5 win to even the series at a game apiece.

River City starter Zach Robertson gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings on eight hits with five strikeouts as Washington (18-25) built the 5-0 lead, chasing Robertson with a two-run homerun in the sixth. It would be the final runs scored for the WildThings.

The Rascals (31-13) plated three runs to cut the deficit to 5-3 in the sixth inning with a Stephen Holdren single followed by consecutive doubles from Chad Maddox and Brodin scored three.

Reliever Brandon Cunniff (4-0) walked the bases loaded but got out of trouble in the seventh before the Rascals' offense exploded again in the bottom half.

Bobby Burk and Chris McClendon started the frame with singles, moved to second and third on a wild pitch, with Burk scoring on a Sanders groundout. Holdren followed with a walk and Maddox reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases for Brodin who drove in two to give the Rascals the 6-5 lead. Jason Patton added a run with an RBI double to make it 7-5.

All-Star's Derrick Miramontes and Kirkland Rivers combined to shut out Washington in the eighth and ninth as Rivers picked up his sixth save.

River City will look to take the series today with first pitch set for 7:05. Washington sends Casey Barnes (2-3, 1.91) to the mound against the Rascals' Erick Carillo (0-1, 8.44).
