Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Pedro Severino went 1-for-3 with two RBI, boosting the Syracuse Chiefs (27-21) to a 3-1 victory over the Gwinnett Braves (24-27) Sunday afternoon at Coolray Field.
Severino broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI single in the fourth and added a sacrifice fly in the ninth to help the Chiefs complete the three-game sweep.
Gwinnett jumped on top in the first inning, putting five straight runners on base and going ahead on a Brandon Snyder RBI single. But the G-Braves would only get six more baserunners the rest of the game against Syracuse starter Paolo Espino (W, 3-4) and two relievers.
The Chiefs pulled level in the third against G-Braves' starter Tyrell Jenkins (L, 5-3) when Matt den Dekker lifted a sacrifice fly to left field with the bases loaded, scoring Espino. Jenkins allowed two runs over a season-high 7.0 innings, scattering seven hits. His 107 pitches thrown were also a season-high as he struck out four and walked only one.
Espino retired 11 in a row after Snyder's second single of the game with two outs in the third and completed 7.0 innings while allowing just the one run. He walked one and struck out four while also going 1-for-2 at the plate. Juan Gutierrez (H, 3) worked around a two-out double by Snyder in the eighth and Nick Masset (S, 3) retired the G-Braves in the ninth to close it out.
Ronnier Mustelier led off the ninth with a single up the middle against Masset, but Blake Lalli bounced into a 4-6-3 double play and Braeden Schlehuber struck out to send the G-Braves to their second three-game sweep of the season.
Snyder had three of Gwinnett's nine hits and also stole his third base of the season. Emilio Bonifacio singled and swiped his 16th base of the year, while scoring the lone G-Braves' run.
Tony Campana and Matt Skole each went 2-for-4 and Trea Turner was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks for Syracuse.
Gwinnett will open a three-game series against the Pawtucket Red Sox Monday evening at 6:05 p.m. Right-hander John Gant (3-0, 2.48) makes his seventh start for the G-Braves against lefty Roenis Elias (2-3, 4.28) for the Red Sox. Tony Schiavone will have the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM at 5:35 p.m.
Monday is Memorial Day, with a special 6:05 p.m. start. Following the game, there will be a fireworks display. Tickets for Monday's game are on sale now at the Coolray Field Ticket Office, call 678-277-0340 or visit GwinnettBraves.com/tickets to purchase.
