Biloxi Shuckers News Release
PENSACOLA, FL - A five-run seventh inning was the difference on Monday night as the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (22-33) topped the Biloxi Shuckers (34-23) 5-1 at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
Though he didn't factor into the decision, RHP Luis Ortiz turned in four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit against Pensacola and striking out four. On the other side, RHP Daniel Wright kept the Shuckers off balance all night, hurling six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and a walk while recording ten strikeouts.
Biloxi put together their best threat in the top of the seventh. Jake Hager singled with one out and swiped second base before Trent Grisham walked. Tyler Heineman moved the runners over with a groundout to first, but RHP Cody Ponce (L, 2-4) left a pair of men in scoring position with a groundout to short.
Pensacola delivered all of their runs in the bottom of the seventh. A single by Luis Gonzalez and back-to-back walks loaded the bases. Chris Okey emptied them with a double that hit off the top of the wall in left, putting the Blue Wahoos up 3-0. Daniel Sweet hit in place of RHP Robinson Leyer (W, 3-2) and tripled in Okey. The rally was capped by a sacrifice fly from CJ McElroy, giving Pensacola a 5-0 lead.
The Shuckers prevented the shutout in the ninth. Lucas Erceg singled with one out and was joined on base by Hager after a walk. Heineman singled to center two batters later, driving in Erceg to make it 5-1. RHP Alejandro Chacin (S, 2) came in to face pinch hitter Keston Hiura and induced a pop out to center, finishing the game.
Game Three of a five-game series is on Tuesday night at 6:35 PM. The Shuckers will send RHP Zack Brown (4-0, 2.75) to the hill against Blue Wahoos' RHP Keury Mella (4-2, 3.16). The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/100.9 FM, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App.
