Four-Run Second Inning Sets Tone in 10-2 Generals Setback

June 5, 2018 - Southern League (SL1)
Jackson Generals News Release

JACKSON, TENN. - The Jackson Generals continue to play hide-and-seek with first place in the Southern League's North Division, with Tuesday evening being a night where the Generals' talents remained largely hidden. Though they collected 10 hits, the Generals fell 10-2 to the Tennessee Smokies, leaving a season-high 16 men on base in defeat. The setback featured a season-high 16 hits allowed by the Generals' pitching staff, keeping Jackson a game behind first-place Chattanooga despite the Lookouts losing at Mobile.

An infield error on a pickoff throw in the first inning helped Tennessee score their first run off Generals starter Bo Takahashi, but the second inning brought the most damage against the 21-year-old right-hander. Each of the first five Smokies batting in the second reached base, as the visiting side scored four runs on five hits and batted all nine men in the order. Takahashi pitched a 1-2-3 third inning, departing with the Generals behind 5-0 after 74 pitches thrown and eight hits allowed. Yuhei Nakaushiro fared little better in relief, allowing three runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to drive his ERA north of six for the season. Bud Jeter worked a pair of scoreless frames in the seventh and eight, and Kirby Bellow allowed an unearned run in the ninth.

The only General with a multi-hit game on Tuesday was Josh Prince, who continues to swing the bat with confidence over the past few weeks. Prince collected three hits and scored one of Jackson's two runs, bumping his average up to .309 for the season and .400 over his last ten games. The Generals went without an extra-base hit on Tuesday, stranding a season-worst 16 men in defeat. They were 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position, leaving multiple men on base in the first, third, fourth, fifth, seventh, and eighth frames. Yuhei Nakaushiro collected his first professional hit and RBI with a single in the fourth.
