Montgomery Biscuits News Release
PEARL, Mis. - For the first time since April 2005, the Montgomery Biscuits (29-29) are 5-0 to begin a month as they won their fifth-straight game, 8-2, to win the series against the Mississippi Braves (25-33) on Tuesday night at Trustmark Park. Montgomery is back at .500 for the first time since April 6, when it was the team's second game of the season.
Sam McWilliams (1-2) made his third Double-A start for the Biscuits his best, as the 6'7" right-hander went six innings and allowed just two runs (only one earned) on six hits to go along with no walks and a season-high seven strikeouts en route to his first Montgomery win.
The Hendersonville, Tennessee native got some early offensive assistance from Mike Brosseau who hit a broken-bat teardrop of an RBI-single into center to put the Biscuits up 1-0 in the top of the second. The lead wouldn't last long, however, as Connor Lien tied it with an RBI-single of his own in the bottom of the second. The run was Mississippi's first of the series, and it snapped a 25-consecutive scoreless innings streak by Biscuits pitchers.
Montgomery would explode for six runs in the top of the third against Mississippi starter Bryse Wilson (1-2), with a two-run single by Nick Solak, RBI-singles from Brett Sullivan and Nathan Lukes, an RBI-double by Brosseau, and an RBI-groundout by David Rodriguez to put the Biscuits in front 7-1.
Mississippi would pull one back in the fourth on a Luis Valenzuela RBI-single, but Solak kept it a six-run game with his third RBI of the evening on an eighth-inning single to make it 8-2. The Biscuits got two scoreless innings of relief from Dalton Moats, and a scoreless ninth from Roel Ramirez thanks to some stellar defense from Lukes, who made a highlight reel catch in center in the seventh as well.
With Chattanooga's loss to Mobile earlier on Tuesday, the Biscuits are now four games out of first place in the North Division with 12 games to play in the first half.
They'll try to match a season-high six-game winning streak on Wednesday when Brandon Lawson (NR) makes his Double-A debut against Andres Santiago (3-0) at 7:00 PM CT.
The Biscuits will return to Riverwalk Stadium on Friday, June 8, as they welcome the Chattanooga Lookouts for Ladies Night and MAX Fireworks. The series also includes Wizard Night, featuring a jersey auction and MAX Fireworks on Saturday, June 9, as well as Sundae Sunday Ice Cream Social on June 10. The five-game set concludes with Agriculture Night on Monday, June 11, and Summer Splash Day on Tuesday, June 12.
