Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Binghamton Mets grabbed a late lead with two runs in the top of the seventh only to blow the advantage in the bottom of the inning in a 4-3 loss to the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Monday night at the Diamond. The B-Mets matched a season-low with four hits in their second straight loss.
With Richmond leading 2-1, Squirrels starter Jack Snodgrass opened the door for Binghamton in the decisive inning by issuing a pair of walks before ceding to the bullpen. Aderlin Rodriguez greeted Tyler Mizenko by zipping an RBI single up the middle. Xorge Carrillo followed by chopping into a run-producing double-play, plating Josh Rodriguez with the go-ahead run.
After relying on five extra-base hits in the first six innings, Richmond used small-ball to scratch back in the seventh. Rando Moreno led off with an infield single and took second on a wild pitch. After a four-pitch walk to Angel Villalona, Matt Koch took over for B-Met starter Seth Lugo.
Kelby Tomlinson bunted both runners up and Javier Herrera sent a chopper up the middle to tie the game. Williamson pushed the Squirrels ahead for good by legging out a potential inning-ending double play, beating the relay throw to allow Daniel Carbonell to score the go-ahead run.
Richmond had used a big fly to get on the board in the second. Ricky Oropesa started the inning by sending Lugo's 2-1 pitch over the right-field wall for his third homer of the season.
Snodgrass cruised through five scoreless innings in his third career start against the B-Mets. The lefty surrendered just one hit, a double by Dustin Lawley, while using nine groundouts to keep the B-Mets offense in check.
Gavin Cecchini snapped Binghamton out of the lull in the sixth. The shortstop blistered an 0-1 pitch from the southpaw over the left-field wall. His second round-tripper of the season knotted the game at one.
The Flying Squirrels returned serve in the bottom of the inning with some power of their own. Mac Williamson opened the frame by doubling to the left-field alley. Three batters later, Myles Schroder scorched a triple to the same spot, pushing Richmond back in front.
After grabbing the lead in the seventh, Stephen Johnson and Josh Osich combined to keep the B-Mets off the board in the eighth and Joan Gregorio notched his first Double-A save with a perfect ninth.
Lugo (2-1) struck out a season-high eight, but was touched for four runs over six innings in his first. Mizenko (1-0) collected the win despite swallowing his first blown save.
The B-Mets (18-13) continue their three-game visit to Richmond on Tuesday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Rainy Lara takes the mound against LHP Matt Lujan. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
POSTGAME NOTES: The series is a rematch of the 2014 Eastern League Championship Series...Binghamton was shutout through five innings for the sixth time this season...Adam Kolarek stretched his scoreless appearance streak to five games (9.1 IP) with a shutout eighth
