Comeback Curve Take Game One, 7-4
May 11, 2015 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - The Curve were able to erase an early four-run deficit to storm back and defeat the Bowie Baysox, 7-4, on Monday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Stetson Allie helped lead the charge with a bases-clearing double in the sixth before the Curve took the lead for good in the seventh.
The Curve spotted Bowie a four-run lead in the second inning when they sent nine to the plate off Chad Kuhl and scored four times. Kuhl settled in after the second and went on to finish six innings in his no-decision. He allowed four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Trailing 4-0 entering the sixth, Max Moroff led the inning off with an infield single to extend his on-base streak to 27 games and his hitting streak 11. Josh Bell followed and was hit by a pitch before Willy Garcia roped a long single to right field to load the bases. Allie ripped his big double to left-center to pull the Curve within one.
Edward Salcedo grounded out for the inning's second out. Eric Wood delivered the game-tying hit with a single to right that drove Allie home to tie it. That chased Bowie starter Tim Berry from the game after 5.1 innings.
In the seventh, the Curve rally started with two outs when Bell worked a walk. Garcia stroked a single to left for his third hit of the night. Allie came back to the plate and looked to be out on a foul out but Garabez Rosa dropped the ball to continue the inning. Then Allie hit a ball to first that went through the legs of first baseman Sean Halton. That error, the third of the inning, allowed Bell to score and put the Curve in front. Salcedo singled in an insurance run to make it, 6-4.
Keon Broxton added a third run of insurance with a RBI single to bring home Jacob Stallings in the eighth.
John Kuchno (2-2) picked up the win with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Yhonathan Barrios slammed the door in the ninth with his seventh save of the season.
Alone in first place, the Curve (18-11) aim to widen their lead over Bowie (18-13) in the 6 p.m. game on Tuesday night. It'll be a Two-for-Tuesday presented by Atlantic Broadband with 2-for-1 offers on tickets, hot dogs and small popcorns.
On the mound for the Curve will be RHP Angel Sanchez (2-1, 1.91), who looks for his first win at home in 2015. He'll be opposed by RHP Elih Villanueva (4-2, 2.78). Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
