
Eastern League Weekly Award Winners Announced for May 4-10

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of May 4th through May 10th:
Reading Fightin Phils first baseman Art Charles has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of May 4th-May 10th. The 24-year old hit .632 (12-for-19) with four doubles, four home runs, eight RBIs, seven runs scored, two walks and a 1.474 slugging percentage in five games for the Fightin Phils last week. Charles, who is a native of Bakersfield, California, had three hits in each of the four games that he started last week, including going 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs in Reading's 10-9 loss at Erie on Saturday night. The 6'6", 220 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in batting average (.632), slugging percentage (1.474), on-base percentage (.667), OPS (2.140), extra-base hits (8) and total bases (28) last week. He also tied for the lead in runs scored (7) and finished ranked among the weekly leaders in hits (12-2nd), RBI (8-tied 2nd) and doubles (4-tied 3rd). With his performance last week Charles raised his batting average for the season to .400 and his slugging percentage to .800, both of which currently lead the league. Art was acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays on February 23, 2013. He was originally selected by the Blue Jays in the 20th round of the 2010 draft out of Bakersfield College.
Yohan Flande, a left-handed starting pitcher for the New Britain Rock Cats, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 4th-May 10th. The 6'2", 180 lb. hurler started a pair of games for the Rock Cats last week and had a record of 2-0 with nine strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Flande, who is a native of El Seibo, Dominican Republic, made his first start of the week last Monday night against the visiting Harrisburg Senators and pitched six innings in New Britain's 4-2 victory. He gave up one unearned run and scattered six hits while striking out six batters. Yohan was even more impressive in his second start of the week on Saturday afternoon at Portland, firing a one-hit shutout in the Rock Cats 3-0 win. He struck out three batters and walked one while throwing the first nine-inning complete game shutout in the Eastern League this season. The 29-year old tied for the league lead in wins (2) and ERA (0.00) last week and also ranked among the leaders in WHIP (0.53-3rd), strikeouts (9-tied 4th) and batting average against (.140-6th). Yohan, who has a record of 5-0 with a 1.36 ERA in six starts with New Britain this season, was signed by the Colorado Rockies as a free agent on November 23, 2013. He previously spent time in the Atlanta and Philadelphia organizations.
