Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Florida State League announced its 2017 All-Star teams on Thursday, and seven members of the Clearwater Threshers will represent the FSL North in a midsummer showcase at newly renovated Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Fla.
Catcher Deivi Grullon, infielder Drew Stankiewicz, outfielder Zach Coppola, and pitchers Jose Taveras, Jeff Singer, Cole Irvin, and Seranthony Dominguez were all voted in by the league's coaches, broadcaster, and official scorers.
Grullon, 21, has ranked among the league's top catchers both offensively and defensively. He was named to his first All-Star game after batting .276 with four home runs in his first 38 games, while gunning down 15-of-41 (36.6%) of opposing base stealers.
Stankiewicz, an 11th round draft pick out of Arizona State in 2014, carries a .286 average through the end of May, with a career-high four home runs. Coppola, 23, is coming off a scorching .392 average in the month of May and ranks second in the league with a .350 average, as of June 1. A 13th round draft pick out of South Dakota State in 2015, Coppola was named a New York-Penn League All-Star in 2015, and hit .315 combined between Lakewood and Clearwater last year.
Taveras and Irvin have both consistently ranked among the league's best starting pitchers.
Taveras, 23, led the South Atlantic League with 154 strikeouts a season ago, and has gone 4-2 with a 2.26 ERA in his first nine starts for Clearwater, limiting opponents to just a .225 average. Irvin, who was drafted in the fifth round out of Oregon last year, skipped Low-A and dominated the FSL in his first month, posting a 1.04 ERA over four starts in April.
Singer, a 23-year-old lefty, leads the FSL with 11 saves in 12 attempts. His ERA is just 1.69 over 19 relief appearances, in which he has held opponents to a 1.70 average while striking out 30 batters in 26.2 innings.
Dominguez dominated in his seven appearances, before being sidelined on May 13. The 22-year-old right-hander was 3-0 with a 2.02 ERA, with a whopping 45 strikeouts in 35.2 innings.
This year's FSL All-Star game will take place on June 17 at 7 p.m. as the best of the North division battle the FSL South at Publix Field in Lakeland.
