Oshawa Generals News Release

The Generals returned from the road to take on the Mississauga Steelheads tonight at the Tribute Communities Centre. With a big victory over the Frontenacs on Tuesday afternoon and a close loss to the Battalion last night, the Gens record sits at 22-14-2-0 on the season. Looking to rebound from yesterday's loss, the Gens aimed for a win over the Steelheads in front of the hometown crowd.

1st Period:

The Gens wasted no time to start off the contest, getting their first goal of the game just one minute into the first period. The goal came off a Steelheads turnover that Serron Noel picked up and passed to Allan McShane who immediately dished it backdoor to Anthony Salinitri to bury the 1-0 tally. After the first goal, Oshawa's offense kept rolling with Allan McShane pulling off a beautiful backhand move in alone to beat Mississauga's goaltender, putting the Gens up by two. However, the two-goal lead didn't last for long, as the Steelheads answered back just a minute later off a goal by James Hardie to give them their first of the game. With the Steelheads on the board, the back and forth scoring continued as Serron Noel potted a one-timer off a pass from Anthony Salinitri to put the Gens up 3-1. Immediately after restoring the two-goal lead, the Gens kept adding to their total with defenseman Matt Brassard ripping a shot from the point that found the back of the net for Oshawa's fourth goal of the evening. With five minutes left in the first, the Gens got a minute and a half of a 5-on-3 powerplay after the Steelheads took back to back penalties. While they got a good cycle going on the advantage, the Gens couldn't find the back of the net on the opportunity. Just before the end of the period, Oshawa took two back to back penalties of their own but managed to kill them off to head into the intermission with a 4-1 lead.

2nd Period:

The Gens opened the period by getting a powerplay from a high-sticking call to the Steelheads. However, it was Mississauga that was able to score shorthanded, putting them within two of the Gens. Gaining momentum off the shorthanded tally, the Steelheads got their third of the night soon after their penalty expired, closing the gap to one. After the goal, the Gens received a delay of game penalty to put them on the penalty kill. With a strong PK effort, the Gens came out of the infraction still up 4-3. Just before the halfway mark of the period, both teams took penalties one after the other to put the play at 4-on-4. The Steelheads had the majority of the time on attack with the extra space on the ice, but neither team added to the score on the opportunity. With four minutes left in the second, the Gens took a penalty for high-sticking to give Mississauga a powerplay. The Gens were able to hold off the Steelheads powerplay and keep their 4-3 lead through two periods.

3rd Period:

The Gens opened the period with a quality chance from Serron Noel who broke in toward the net and nearly slid the puck past the Steelheads goaltender. Four minutes into the period, Cole Resnick came streaking down the wing and snapped a shot that went through Mississauga's goalie and trickled into the net, giving Oshawa a 5-3 lead. After the goal, the Gens got called for a roughing penalty, but killed it off with strong defensive play. With just over six minutes remaining in the game, the Steelheads potted a wrist shot goal past the Gens to put them back within one. The one-goal gap didn't last long as the Gens came right back with a goal from Giovanni Vallati off a tip in front. Mississauga pulled their goalie with two minutes left in the game to look for a comeback, but the Gens held them off and buried a goal in the empty net by Salinitri to claim a 7-4 win at home.

After tonight's big win over the Steelheads, the Gens will head on the road to battle the Ottawa 67's on Sunday night to close out the weekend.
