Erie SeaWolves News Release

Erie exploded for seven runs in the 4th inning to propel the SeaWolves to a 7-3 victory over Akron and their ace, T.J. McFarland. Ramon Garcia continued his dominance of the Aeros on Friday night, tossing 6 1/3 innings, en route to his 3rd win of the year, all against Akron. During his outing, Garcia held Akron to 3 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 7. The Erie starter was able to keep the Akron offense off balance all night with a heavy dose of off speed pitches.

Through the first three innings, McFarland faced the minimum, allowing only one SeaWolves batter to reach base, while striking out three. The 4th inning was a different story, as McFarland didn't get an out until after seven SeaWolves had already crossed the plate.

Jamie Johnson led off the 4th with a hard hit single off the glove of second baseman Matt Lawson. Brandon Douglas followed with a single to right, then Niuman Romero put Erie on the board with a 2-run triple down the first base line. The two RBIs gave Romero 27 on the year. After the triple, Jordan Lennerton drove home Romero, his 31st RBI, on an infield single off the back of McFarland. After a bunt single by Rawley Bishop, catcher John Murrian singled to center, where a Tim Fedroff error allowed Lennerton to score. The next batter, Wade Gaynor, would deliver the big blow - a 3-run homer to left field, giving the SeaWolves a 7-0 lead. The homer was Gaynor's 2nd of the year, and the three RBIs gives him 9 on the season.

The homerun by Gaynor was the first long ball given up by McFarland on the season. Coming into the 4th inning of Friday's game, McFarland had allowed only 11 runs all year.

The Aeros got one run in the 5th, when Fedroff grounded into a fielder's choice to first, scoring Thomas Neal. Akron got the rest of their runs in the 7th, on a Matt Lawson sacrifice fly, and a Fedroff RBI single. Robbie Weinhardt got the save for Erie, throwing 2 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Ramon Garcia goes to 3-3 on the year with Friday's win. McFarland took the loss for Akron, going 5 innings, and giving up 7 runs on 8 hits, 1 walk, and 5 punch outs. The loss drops him to 8-2 on the season. The win gets Erie back to .500, at 23-23, while Akron falls to 28-17.

Game two of the four game set is scheduled for Saturday at 7:05 pm. Zack Segovia (4-4, 5.36 ERA) takes the mound for Erie, facing off against Brett Brach (1-1, 4.26 ERA). Saturday night is also Star Wars Night at Jerry Uht Park.
