Akron RubberDucks News Release

AKRON, OH - The Cleveland Indians announced Friday that Akron shortstop Juan Diaz has been promoted to the active major league roster, and will be in uniform for his major league debut when the Tribe plays at Chicago tonight at 8:10 EST.

In a corresponding move, second baseman Matt Lawson has been added to the Aeros roster, and will be available for tonight's series opener against the Erie SeaWolves.

Diaz, 23, has been a mainstay for the Aeros this season, appearing in 34 games, all at shortstop. He is hitting .232, with three homers and 18 RBI. He ranks second on the club in RBI. After struggling out of the gate this season, Diaz is hitting .250 for the Aeros in May. All three of his home runs have also been hit this month. Defensively, Diaz has anchored the Aeros infield, committing only five errors in 162 total chances.

A seventh-year pro, Diaz spent all of last year with the Aeros, hitting .255 with nine homers and 60 RBI's in 133 games. He was acquired from Seattle in a trade for major leaguer Russell Branyan on June 27, 2010. That same deal brought Ezequiel Carrera to the Indians organization.

Lawson, 26, was also acquired in a trade with the Mariners, this one in spring training of last season, when the Indians sent major league lefty Aaron Laffey to the Mariners in exchange for Lawson. He reported to Akron and appeared in 30 games for the Aeros last season, hitting .267, with one home run and seven RBI's. Lawson was originally a 14th round pick by Texas in 2007 out of Missouri State University. He was dealt to the Mariners in a trade for Cliff Lee in 2010. Lawson is a career .282 hitter in 435 minor league games.

The Aeros roster now stands at 25 players.

The Aeros will begin a four-game series at Erie on Friday night at 7:05. After four at Erie, the Aeros will return to Canal Park on Tuesday, May 29th, against Bowie. All Aeros games are broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
