Winston-Salem Dash News Release
GREENSBORO, NC - Following the first seven frames, the Winston-Salem Dash were in danger of dropping a second straight contest against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Trailing 6-4 heading to the eighth though, Winston-Salem found a two-out rally plating seven runs as the Dash came from behind to take an 11-6 victory over Greensboro Sunday afternoon at First National Bank Field in front of 3,839 fans.
Winston-Salem (36-30) took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo shot, but the lead would be short lived.
Greensboro (37-30) responded immediately getting a pair of runs against Dash starter, Kohl Simas, in the bottom of the first and second before tacking on another run in the third taking a 5-1 lead into the middle innings.
In the fifth, the Dash started chipping away at the deficit. Wilfred Veras made it a 5-2 game on an RBI single, and in the sixth, Ivan Gonzalez ripped a double to center field that brought home two runs making it 5-4. Greensboro got insurance in the seventh on its second home run of the day, and the Dash trailed by two heading into the eighth, 6-4, needing a late rally.
They found it in the eighth. Following a walk, single, and a runner reaching on an error, Winston-Salem loaded the bases with two outs. Andy Atwood, who was not in the starting lineup, was called upon to pinch hit in the big spot. The Washington native was ready. On a 1-2 pitch, Atwood singled to left field that plated two runs tying it up, 6-6.
The Dash were not done there. Veras was intentionally walked to load the bases and get to Michael Turner . As the Arkansas product has done so many times this year, Turner worked himself to a full count and was issued the free pass giving Winston-Salem its second lead of the day, 7-6.
With the bases still loaded and the one run lead, the Dash wanted insurance, and Shawn Goosenberg bought it. On a 2-2 pitch, the first basemen launched a grand slam to left field for his sixth homer on the season, blowing it wide open and capping off a seven-run frame.
Manager Guillermo Quiroz went to his big arms in the backend of his bullpen bringing on Adisyn Coffey for the eighth working a shutout frame and closer Tristan Stivors for the ninth. The Texas State product worked a clean frame picking up a strikeout in the ninth and securing the 11-6 victory for Winston-Salem.
Offensively for the Dash, Terrell Tatum, Goosenberg, Wes Kath, and Gonzalez all notched multi-hit outings. Ernesto Jaquez picked up the win for Winston-Salem after coming in in the seventh while Cy Nielson was tabbed with the loss.
Winston-Salem continues its road trip starting on Tuesday in Aberdeen, Maryland as the Dash and Aberdeen IronBirds meet for the second time this season. Game one of the six game series is slated for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch from Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium.
