Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
The Blue Rocks and IronBirds concluded their series Sunday afternoon, with Aberdeen taking the win by a final score of 5-2.
The IronBirds jumped out to an early lead thanks to a leadoff home run by Max Wagner on the second pitch of the game.
The IronBirds would take on another run in the third on a solo home run from Creed Williams, and two more in the sixth on a throwing error and sacrifice fly to make it a 4-0 Aberdeen lead before the Blue Rocks could record their first baserunner.
IronBirds starter Kyle Virbitsky was excellent through his six innings of work, not allowing a hit until a Geraldi Diaz base knock in the bottom of the sixth. He struck out eight Blue Rocks batters before being relieved for in the seventh.
The change of arms was exactly what the Blue Rocks needed to get their offense going. They would tally two runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Will Frizzell and a sacrifice fly from Jeremy De La Rosa to cut the lead in half.
That was until Holliday struck again in the top of the ninth, providing an insurance run with an RBI single that scored Wagner from third to make it 5-2.
Dylan Heid was able to close out the Blue Rocks in the bottom of the ninth, giving the IronBirds a record one game above .500.
