Sacramento River Cats News Release

TUCSON, Ariz. - Shane Peterson broke the River Cats' six-game homerless drought with a two-run blast in the first inning, and Sacramento went on to defeat the Tucson Padres in Friday's series opener at Kino Stadium, 5-2.

After the Cats took the early lead, Tucson would fight back with two runs in the second to tie the game at two. The game would remain tied until the seventh, when Grant Green delivered a two-out, RBI double that scored the eventual game-winning run. In the ninth, a Jemile Weeks run-scoring triple and an RBI single from Michael Choice gave the River Cats some insurance before Pedro Figueroa closed out the game and gave the Cats their second-straight win.

Justin Thomas started but did not figure in the decision, going five innings and allowing just two runs. After Mike Ekstrom (1-0) tossed a pair of scoreless innings-earning the victory-Figueroa came on for the two-inning save, surrendering three hits without allowing a run.

Tucson starter Wilfredo Boscan also took a no-decision. The loss fell to Padres reliever Brad Boxberger (0-3), who allowed one run in two innings.

Peterson's home run, his fourth of the season, was the first long ball for the Cats since Andy Parrino went deep on May 17. He was one of four River Cats hitters with two hits in the game, leading an 11-hit attack. The 11 hits were the most recorded by the Cats since May 12 at Nashville.

Sacramento and Tucson continue the series Saturday night from Kino Stadium, when River Cats RHP Travis Banwart (2-1, 5.40 ERA) will face RHP Travis Kloess (1-0, 4.32 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. PT.

The River Cats return home Tuesday, May 28, for a four-game set against the Salt Lake Bees. First pitch for Tuesday's series opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Raley Field.
