Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (28-18) clubbed five home runs in a 13-8 win over the Fresno Grizzlies (27-22) on Fireworks Night at Security Service Field. The win puts the team 10 games over .500 and a half-game up on the Tacoma Rainiers for first place in the Pacific Northern division.
Fresno opened up the scoring in the first inning when Roger Kieschnick lined a RBI single to center field. In the bottom of the inning Colorado Springs immediately tied it up when Corey Dickerson belted his sixth home run of the season. Later in the inning Charlie Culberson tripled to plate Ben Paulsen and Tyler Colvin to make it 3-1.
After a scoreless second inning the scoring resumed in third when Juan Perez drove home Gary Brown who doubled to leadoff the inning.
Up 3-2, the Sox expanded on their lead in the bottom of the inning. Grizzlies' starting pitcher Boof Bonser (L, 2-4) gave up a leadoff off single to Tyler Colvin who proceeded to steal second base. Colvin advanced to third on a Culberson single and scored on a Greg Golson ground out. A sacrifice fly by Lars Davis brought home Culberson and put the team up 5-2.
Starting pitcher Chris Volstad (W, 2-0) blanked the Grizzlies in the top of the fourth and in the bottom of the inning the Sox continued to pile on the runs. Ryan Wheeler began the inning with a single followed by back-to-back home runs by Ben Paulsen and Tyler Colvin. Golson added one of his own a batter later to make it 9-2 Colorado Springs.
A Culberson two-RBI double in the fifth increase made the score 11-2, but the Grizzlies cut the deficit down to five in the sixth inning when Kensuke Tanaka unloaded a three-run double and then scored on a Cole Gillespie single.
In the seventh, the Sky Sox built their lead back up to six when Ben Paulsen hit his second home run of the night. With his two-run shot, Paulsen became the third straight Sky Sox to have hit two-home runs in a game. Tyler Colvin accomplished the feat yesterday and McBride hit two dingers on May 22.
The Sox added their 13th and final run in that inning when Tyler Colvin scored his fifth run of the day on a fielding error by Carter Jurica. Colvin's five runs ties the team's record for most runs in a game which was set by Charlie Blackmon earlier this year on April 15 against the Las Vegas 51s.
The Grizzlies added two runs in the eighth, but Mike McClendon got the games first 1-2-3 inning in the ninth to hand Fresno their 22nd loss of the year.
At 6:05 pm MT tomorrow these two teams will square off again in the second game of the series. Roman Colon (0-1, 0.00) will be making his first start of the season at Security Service Field for the Sky Sox against Mitch Lively (2-1, 9.00).
