Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
NASHVILLE -- Matt Magill pitched six scoreless innings in his first start back at Triple-A, and the Albuquerque Isotopes held on for a 3-2 win over the Nashville Sounds at Herschel Greer Stadium on Saturday night.
Magill (1-0) and R.J. Seidel (0-2) both took shutouts into the fifth inning. Alex Castellanos hit an opposite-field home run in the sixth inning for the first run in the game. It was Castellanos' sixth home run of the year, and second in three games.
In the eighth, Matt Angle shortened up to bunt, then pulled the bat back and singled past first baseman Hunter Morris as Nashville put on the "wheel play" for the potential bunt. That single scored Brian Barden to make it 2-0. Elian Herrera then laid down a bunt, Tony Gwynn, Jr. read it from third base, and his nifty slide at home beat the backhand flip of relief pitcher Kyle Heckathorn.
The Topes would need the insurance runs. Chris Withrow pitched a scoreless eighth and Josh Wall worked a scoreless ninth. Steve Ames allowed a two-out, two-run home run to Hunter Morris to trim the lead to 3-2. It was Morris' team-leading ninth home run.
Stephen Parker then hit a soft liner that Topes second baseman Elian Herrera leaped into the air to catch and preserve the victory. It was Ames' fifth save of the year.
Magill allowed two hits, both doubles to Khris Davis. Magill walked three and struck out eight in six innings. He threw 102 pitches, 64 strikes.
Game three of the four-game series is Sunday afternoon. Blake Johnson (4-2, 3.88) starts for the Isotopes and Johnny Hellweg (2-4, 4.33) starts for the Sounds. First pitch is at 1:05 pm MDT.
