April 4, 2018 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Belleville Senators News Release
The Springfield Thunderbirds edged past the Belleville Senators 2-1 Wednesday night at the Yardmen.
Filip Gustavsson made 24 saves for Belleville while Gabriel Gagne scored. Curtis Valk and Tim Erixon found the net for Springfield while Harri Sateri stopped 33 shots.
The visitors grabbed the lone goal of the opening period through Valk's 19th goal of the season as he pulled off a nice toe drag in the slot before firing past Gustavsson on the power play at the 7:43 mark.
Belleville had three power play chances in the first period but couldn't be Sateri with Max Reinhart coming the closest but his wraparound slid through the crease.
Springfield came closest to scoring in the second but Greg Chase saw his wrister on a partial breakaway ring off the crossbar as the visitors took a 1-0 lead into the third period.
Belleville piled on the pressure in the third period, outshooting the Thunderbirds 12-8 with debutant Andrew Sturtz being robbed on a glove save, but the Sens couldn't solve Sateri until they were down 2-0 through Erixon's second goal of the season with 2:17 left.
They managed to break the shutout 10 seconds later however through Gagne who took advantage of Nick Paul forcing a turnover to bury his 19th goal of the year but the Sens couldn't muster a tying goal.
Sturtz made his professional debut while Alex Formenton made his AHL debut. Sens defenceman Erik Burgdoerfer played in his 250th career AHL game.
The Senators face Rochester Friday night before returning home Saturday to host the Laval Rocket. Tickets are available.
