Harrisburg Senators News Release
The Harrisburg Senators scored five runs in the eighth and final inning of a scheduled seven-inning contest, and defeated the Akron Aeros 6-1 in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Canal Park in Akron. The win temporarily ties the Senators (66-59) with Bowie for the second and final playoff spot in the Eastern League's Western Division, with each team set to play later today. The Senators and Aeros play game two of their doubleheader at approximately 5:00 PM Sunday evening, while Bowie plays at Richmond at 6:05.
Akron (64-61) and the Senators were tied at one after seven innings of play in game one, but the Sens broke out in a big way in the top of the eighth. Jhonatan Solano drove in the first runs with a two-RBI single, driving home Edgardo Baez from third and Ofilio Castro from second base. Then, two batters later, Stephen Lombardozzi tripled in Solano and Brad Coon, who had reached on a fielding error. Josh Johnson followed that up with a single to drive in Lombardozzi, and the Senators led 6-1 in extra innings. Orlando Hernandez completed his perfect two and a third innings by shutting down the Aeros in the bottom of the eighth, and earned the win in the process. He is now 1-1 on the year.
The Senators struck first in the ballgame, when Chris Marrero doubled to drive in Jesus Valdez from first base in the top of the third inning. Akron tied it in the sixth, on a Lonnie Chisenhall double that scored Jordan Henry. Both starting pitchers--Tanner Roark for the Sens, and Corey Kluber for Akron--gave up just one run, but each took a no-decision. Reliever Nick Hagadone (2-2) gave up all five runs in the eighth, and took the loss. The Senators had eleven total hits in the game, including a three-for-three day from Baez. Lombardozzi, Johnson, and Marrero each had two hits, while Valdez and Solano had one apiece.
Left-hander Aaron Thompson (4-12, 5.74) gets the start for the Senators in game two of the doubleheader against the Aeros. Fans can hear all the action by tuning in to 1460 AM The Ticket or logging on to www.senatorsbaseball.com.
