Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

BOWIE, MD - The Richmond Flying Squirrels fired their ninth shutout of the season, blanking the Bowie Baysox, 4-0, on Sunday night at Prince George's Stadium. The win netted Richmond the three-game series, and also dropped the Baysox out of second place in the Western Division.

Pitching dominated the early portion of the ballgame as Squirrels' righty Felix Romero and Bowie lefty Pedro Viola dueled to a scoreless-draw after five innings.

Romero (4-2) departed to the win after five innings, shutting out the Baysox on four hits. He walked one and struck out six, making his first start since August 4th.

Viola continued into the sixth inning, where the Squirrels finally broke through. Viola walked Ryan Lormand to start the inning and he advanced to second on a groundout from Thomas Neal. Conor Gillaspie put the Squirrels in front with a single to left-center field.

Viola (3-3) departed after Gillaspie's single, having worked 5 2/3 innings. He was saddled with the loss, allowing just a lone run on four hits. He walked three and struck out six in the hard-luck defeat.

Richmond added a pair of runs against the Bowie bullpen in the seventh. Chad Thall started the inning on the mound and Tyler La Torre greeted him with a single. A batter later, Nick Noonan laid down a bunt-single to put runners at the corners with one out. Bob McCrory was summoned in relief and Lorman greeted him with a perfect squeeze-bunt that brought in La Torre. The Squirrels made it 3-0 when Neal singled on the infield and Brandon Waring threw wildly to first base. The error allowed Noonan to score from second base.

The Squirrels capped the scoring with a final run on a second RBI single from Gillaspie in the ninth inning. The run support wasn't necessary however, as left-hander Andy Sisco dominated over three innings of scoreless relief. He struck out a season-high six and allowed just one hit. Ronnie Ray worked a perfect ninth, including two strikeouts, as Richmond hurlers struck out 14 batters in the ballgame.

The Squirrels return to Richmond to open a three-game series with the Reading Phillies (Philadelphia Phillies) at 7:05 PM on Monday night at The Diamond. RHP Mike MacDonald will make the start for Richmond against LHP Johan Flande for the R-Phils.
