Senators Outlast RubberDucks, 6-5 in 10 Innings

Summary

The Akron RubberDucks rallied from a 3-0 deficit and took the lead in the 10th inning, but Harrisburg second baseman Darren Baker hit a walk-off, two-run double to give the Senators a 6-5, 10-inning win at FNB Field Wednesday night.

Turning Point

With Akron leading, 5-4, in the bottom of the 10th inning, pinch runner Drew Millas was placed at second base. Right-hander Mason Hickman walked shortstop Jackson Cluff before striking out left fielder Jack Dunn. Baker then hit a double to deep center field, scoring Millas and Cluff to win the game for Harrisburg.

Mound Presence

Right-hander Thomas Ponticelli worked a scoreless first inning but allowed a second-inning, two-run home run to third baseman Omar Meregildo. In the third inning, he allowed a sacrifice fly by Meregildo to make it 3-0. Ponticelli departed after 2 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Left-hander Randy Labaut and right-hander Luis Oviedo each pitched 1 2/3 innings to work through the sixth. Right-hander Cade Smith allowed a run on a hit, two walks and a wild pitch in the seventh. Right-hander Kyle Marman worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings around two walks. Hickman pitched a perfect ninth inning before losing in the 10th. With 14 strikeouts, Akron's pitching staff reached 1,300 for the season, tying the 2021 Somerset Patriots for the Eastern League/Double-A Northeast record.

Duck Tales

Akron scored single runs in each of the fifth through eighth innings. Third baseman Raynel Delgado hit a fifth-inning RBI single, second baseman Angel Martínez hit a sixth-inning RBI double, and shortstop José Tena hit a seventh-inning RBI groundout, tying the game, 3-3. Right fielder Jhonkensy Noel hit an eighth-inning solo home run to tie it, 4-4. In the 10th, Martínez hit a two-out RBI single off right-hander Zach Brzykcy for Akron's first lead at 5-4. It was the first hit by a RubberDuck against Brzykcy in his six outings (seven innings) against Akron this season.
