Minnesota Lynx News Release
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The WNBA today named Minnesota Lynx guard Seimone Augustus its Western Conference Player of the Month for July. Augustus becomes the second Lynx player to win Western Conference Player of the Month honors, joining Rebekkah Brunson, who won the award last month.
Over eight games in July, Augustus, who was honored as the Western Conference Player of the Week for games played July 18 - July 21, averaged 19.0 points - second-most in the Western Conference - on .549 percent shooting from the floor to lead the Lynx to a 7-1 mark for the month, the team's best-ever record in July. Augustus scored 16 or more points in six of eight games and at least 20 points four times, including a season-high 25 points (11-of-15 FG) on July 20 in a 106-98 win at Phoenix that snapped the Mercury's six-game winning streak. In that game, Augustus' layup with 7:23 to play in the fourth quarter was her 1128th field goal in a Lynx uniform, breaking Katie Smith's all-time franchise record. Augustus, who needs 71 points to reach the 3000-point plateau for her career, is off to one of the most prolific scoring starts of any player in WNBA history. Only Cynthia Cooper required fewer games to reach the 2500-point mark.
For the season, Augustus ranks eighth in the league and third in the West in scoring (16.3 ppg).
Highlights of Augustus' month included:July 20 at Phoenix: Contributed a season-high 25 points (11-of-15 FG), six rebounds and four assists in a 106-98 win that snapped the Mercury's six-game winning streak.
July 13 vs. Phoenix: Recorded 22 points, four rebounds and three assists in a 112-105 loss (Minnesota's only loss in July) at the hands of the Mercury.
July 9 vs. Connecticut: Scored 20 points, to go along with five rebounds and three assists in a 90-67 win over the Sun.
July 26 vs. Los Angeles: Scored 22 points in an 85-72 win over the Sparks.
Augustus has helped lead a remarkable turnaround for the Lynx and has managed to stand out on a team that sent four players to the 2011 WNBA All-Star Game. With her efforts, the Lynx - whose current six-game winning string equals the longest single-season streak in franchise history - sit atop the WNBA at 13-4. Minnesota won 13 games all of last season.
The Lynx play host to the Phoenix Mercury tonight at 7:00 pm on ESPN2. The players will wear commemorative pink jerseys in support of Breast Health Awareness. The jerseys will be auctioned off after the game with the proceeds going to the Lynx Foundation, which supports breast cancer research and support programs in the state of Minnesota. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a pink Lynx rally towel, and the first 1,000 fans will receive a Deuce Brand watch.
