Atlanta's McCoughtry, Minnesota's Augustus Named Players of the Month

NEW YORK, August 2, 2011 - Angel McCoughtry of the Atlanta Dream and Seimone Augustus of the Minnesota Lynx were named the WNBA's Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month, respectively, for regular season games played in July.

McCoughtry, Atlanta's leading scorer on the season, helped guide Atlanta to a 5-3 (.625) record in July. Augustus, meanwhile, led the Lynx to a league-best 7-1 (.875) mark that improved Minnesota's record to 13-4.

McCoughtry closed the month on a tear, earning consecutive Eastern Conference Player of the Week honors after scoring at least 30 points in three of her last five outings. In eight games overall, the University of Louisville product led the league in scoring (25.1 ppg) and ranked second in steals (2.7 spg), behind only the Chicago Sky's Epiphanny Prince (2.8 spg).

For the season, McCoughtry ranks second in the league in scoring (19.8 ppg), trailing only the Phoenix Mercury's Diana Taurasi (20.2 ppg). Her 2.4 steals per game rank second only to Prince (2.9). The recent All-Star selection is also contributing 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.

Highlights of McCoughtry's month included:

July 26 at Tulsa: Scored a career-high 37 points (including an 11-for-22 effort from the field and a 15-for-19 effort on free throws), to go along with four rebounds and three steals in a 76-68 win.

July 31 at Connecticut: Recorded 36 points, four rebounds and three assists in a 99-92 loss to the division rival Sun.

July 20 at Washington: Contributed 33 points and three steals in an 86-79 win over the Mystics.

July 28 vs. Los Angeles: Posted a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds to go along with seven assists in an 89-80 win over the Sparks.

July 16 vs. Chicago: Recorded 24 points, five rebounds and four steals in 76-68 win over the visiting Sky.

In eight games during July, Augustus ranked third overall in scoring with 19.0 ppg while shooting 67-for-122 from the field (eighth in the league, fourth in the West). Augustus scored 16 or more points in six of eight games and at least 20 points four times. In the process, she helped Minnesota take a season series from the defending champion Seattle Storm for the first time since 2003.

Augustus has helped lead a remarkable turnaround in Minnesota and has managed to stand out on a team that sent four players to the 2011 WNBA All-Star Game presented by adidas. With her efforts, the Lynx - whose current six-game winning string equals the best streak in franchise history - sit atop the WNBA at 13-4. Minnesota didn't earn its 13th victory a year ago until the 31st game of the season.

The LSU product is the second consecutive Minnesota player to earn Western Conference Player of the Month honors (Rebekkah Brunson took home the award in June). For the season, Augustus ranks eighth in the league and third in the West in scoring (16.3 ppg).

Highlights of Augustus' month included:

July 20 at Phoenix: Contributed 25 points, six rebounds and four assists in a 106-98 win.

July 13 vs. Phoenix: Recorded 22 points, four rebounds and three assists in a 112-105 loss at the hands of the Mercury.

July 9 vs. Connecticut: Scored 20 points, to go along with five rebounds and three assists in a 90-67 win over the Sun.

July 26 vs. Los Angeles: Scored 22 points in an 85-72 win over the Sparks.
