Fever and Indy Super Cure Partner to Provide Awareness of Komen Tissue Bank

INDIANAPOLIS - Hoping to help raise awareness for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tissue Bank (Komen Tissue Bank), the Indiana Fever has partnered with Indy's Super Cure, a community initiative of the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee. When the Fever hosts Breast Health Awareness Night presented by Community Health Network during next week's game with the New York Liberty (Saturday, Aug. 13, 7:00 p.m.), the game will be dedicated to Indy's Super Cure.

Indianapolis is home to the world's only known tissue bank that collects healthy breast tissue for cancer study and research. The partnership between the 2012 Super Bowl Host Committee and the Komen Tissue Bank capitalizes on Indianapolis' robust health and life sciences resources to propel the search for a cure. The Fever will work with the Super Bowl Host Committee to further the reach of their efforts in the community.

Dr. Tim Goedde, a surgeon representing Community Health Network, explained: "Being able to examine tissue from healthy donors provides enormous advantages to breast cancer research. Comparing noncancerous tissue to malignant or premalignant tissue makes obvious the differences, getting one step closer to a cure."

"Supporting Indy's Super Cure is a tremendous opportunity for our franchise to help drive awareness and encourage donation to the Komen Tissue Bank," said Kelly Krauskopf, chief operating officer and general manager of the Fever.

"I applaud the Super Bowl Host Committee for establishing the Super Cure initiative and utilizing the platform of the NFL Super Bowl," added Krauskopf. "Education and awareness of breast cancer and wellness continues to be one of the top priorities of the WNBA and the Indiana Fever. This is an example of how our community can join together and become partners in powerful health initiatives."

During its game on August 13, the Fever will distribute information to fans about the Komen Tissue Bank and how to donate tissue or financially. On behalf of Indy's Super Cure, a public service announcement featuring two-time Olympic gold medalist and WNBA All-Star Tamika Catchings will air on Fever radio and TV broadcasts, in-arena and on FeverBasketball.com through the remainder of the 2011 season. Catchings will also serve as a spokesperson to encourage women of diversity to donate tissue.

"The potential for Indy's Super Cure to have an international impact starts right here on our home court and we're thrilled the Fever is on our team."

A WNBA playoff participant in six straight seasons and seven times since 2002, the Eastern Conference-leading Indiana Fever continues its 12th season by hosting the San Antonio Silver Stars on Tuesday, Aug. 9 (7:00 p.m.). The Fever conducts Breast Health Awareness Night presented by Community Health Network when Indiana battles the New York Liberty on Saturday, Aug. 13 (7:00 p.m.).
