Second Half Burst Leads Vipers Past Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A strong second half performance led the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (24-8) past the Memphis Hustle (14-18) to secure a 128-115 win on Monday at Landers Center.

The Vipers led the entire first quarter until up until when the clock reached 1:12. A Freddie Gillespie free throw gave the Hustle a 28-27 advantage, but with just 29.7 seconds left in the quarter Trhae Mitchell scored off a layup giving the Vipers a 29-28 lead at the end of the first.

For the first two minutes of the second quarter RGV maintained its lead, but Memphis began to hustle and walked away with a 63-54 lead going into halftime. At the half, RGV's Marcus Foster had already reached 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. Mfiondu Kabengele had 13 points and five rebounds. Houston Rockets Two-Way player Anthony Lamb was one rebound away from a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

RGV dominated in the third quarter as the team scored 43 points while only allowing Memphis to score 24. That was enough for RGV to come out on top at the end of the third with a score of 97-87. The Vipers kept the momentum going until the end of the game which allowed the team to walk away with a 128-115 victory.

Kabengele paved the way for the Vipers with 27 points and seven rebounds followed by Lamb who obtained a double-double with 25 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Foster also had a double-double with 23 points and 12 assists. Tyler Bey reached 15 points and seven rebounds. Marvin Smith added 13 points and eight rebounds while Mitchell secured 12 points and seven rebounds.

Memphis was led by Santi Aldama with a double-double with 36 points and 11 rebounds. Ahmad Caver totaled 15 points and eight assists. Shaq Buchanan hit 14 points and seven rebounds. Both Sean McDermott and Damien Jefferson hit 10 points each.

The Vipers return to the Bert Ogden Arena on Wednesday, March 30 to play the last two regular season games against the Agua Caliente Clippers. Doors open at 6:30 PM CT. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM CT.
