SeaWolves Win Second Straight, 5-3

The SeaWolves won their second straight game on Sunday by a final score of 5-3 at Jerry Uht Park.

Trenton struck first in the top of the third inning. Jason Brown led off the inning and reached on an error by Kody Kirkland at third base. A wild pitch got Brown over to second and a single by Gabe Lopez moved Brown to third to put runners on the corners. Brett Gardner followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Brown for a 1-0 lead. Cody Ehlers singled with two outs to score Lopez, giving the Thunder a 2-0 advantage. Both runs in the inning were unearned off of starter Matt Righter.

The Thunder added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Aarom Baldiris smacked his seventh home run of the season for a 3-0 Trenton lead.

The ‘Wolves trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning but they would finally answer. Clete Thomas and Matt Joyce each connected on their second hits of the game, back-to-back singles to put a pair on Mike Hollimon. Hollimon fell behind in the count but he slammed his seventh home run of the season, a three-run bomb, tying the game at 3-3. Jackson Melian followed the long ball by drawing a walk and Jeff Larish reached on an infield single to put two aboard. The single by Larish broke an 0-for-16 streak at the plate. Steve Torrealba stepped in after the second out was recorded and he singled home Melian for the ‘Wolves first lead of the game at 4-3. On the play, Melian slammed into the catcher Jason Brown and the ball went to the backstop. On the throw back to the plate, the pitcher Jeff Marquez threw wildly passed the catcher allowing Larish to reach third. After a pitching change, Pedro Cotto singled home Larish for a 5-3 Erie lead.

Righter went four innings in a spot start for the ‘Wolves. He allowed three runs, one earned, on three hits. Righter walked two and a struck out two in a no-decision. Kevin Ardoin tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball in relief allowing one hit. Ardoin did not allow a walk and he struck out one. Ardoin picked up his third win of the season.

Alan Mills came into the game and pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

The entire game was pitched by the SeaWolves bullpen, limiting Trenton to just one earned run on four hits. Following the Baldiris home run in the fourth inning, the ‘Wolves retired 17 of the final 18 batters of the game. Erie also did not allow a hit in the final 4.1 innings of play.
