Chesapeake Baysox News Release
ERIE, Penn. - The Baysox pounded out 13 hits but Deik Scram and the Erie SeaWolves completed the sweep with a 6-5 win on Sunday in Erie. Center fielder Dave Krynzel had three hits including a home run in the ninth inning, but Erie's bullpen closed the door to drop the Baysox to 11-17 on the season. The SeaWolves won the three games of the series by a combined four runs, while three different Erie relievers recorded a save over the weekend.
The Baysox scored first against Erie starter Jonah Nickerson. Third baseman Melvin Dorta laced a one-out triple to right in the first inning, and designated hitter Paco Figueroa singled him home with a base hit. Figueroa scored one batter later when right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion lined a double to center with two outs to give the Baysox a two run lead heading into the bottom of the first.
Baysox righty Ryan Keefer, making his first start of the season, ran into trouble in the second inning. Ryan Strieby singled to left to start the inning, and Cale Iorg singled one batter later to put runners on first and second for Scram. The Erie right-fielder took Keefer deep to right for a three-run homer, his fourth of the season, to put the SeaWolves out in front 3-2.
Erie connected for another long ball in the fourth after Keefer hit Strieby to start the inning. Alex Avila followed with his first home run of the season to extend the lead to three. Keefer allowed a double by Iorg before being replaced by left-hander Ryan Rodriguez. The Baysox righty allowed five earned runs on five hits while striking out two, raising his season ERA to 7.42 on the season.
Behind by three runs, the Baysox began to chip away at the Erie lead. Dave Krynzel singled with one out in the fifth and moved to second on a ground out by Dorta. Figueroa singled him home to make the score 5-3. First baseman Brandon Snyder followed with a single, but Nickerson got Concepcion to fly out to end the thread. Figueroa finished the day 3-5 to raise his season average to .337, good enough for sixth in the Eastern League.
The SeaWolves got another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Shawn Roof, but the Baysox again looked to answer in the top of the seventh against the Erie bullpen. Krynzel singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a pass ball. Figueroa singled to put men on the corners for Snyder, who singled to score Krynzel and make the score 6-4. Snyder also had three hits on the day for the Baysox and now leads the Eastern League with a .371 average on the season.
Erie went to Brett Jensen to close out the Baysox in the ninth. With one out, Krynzel got a hold of the Jensen offering and lined it over the wall in right for his fourth home run of the year. Dorta followed with a single to bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but Jensen got Figueroa to ground into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.
The Baysox look to get back on track as they head to Akron to begin a three-game set with the division leading Aeros, who are coming off a three game sweep against Harrisburg over the weekend. Game time tomorrow is set for 7:05 p.m.
