Pair of Trenton Homers Lead to Sweep of B-Mets

Binghamton was swept for the first time in 2009 losing 4-3 Sunday afternoon on a Jose Gil walk-off ninth inning home run off of B-Mets' closer Roy Merritt. The loss spoiled Ryan Coultas' six-inning outing, in which he gave up only two runs. Shawn Bowman had his fifth straight multi-hit day pounding three hits, including a triple and a home run.

With the game tied at three heading into the home half of the ninth, Merritt entered the ball game. On the third pitch he threw, Gil smashed a solo home run over the left-center field wall to give the Thunder a 4-3 win.

Binghamton (13-15) cracked the scoreboard first in the second inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Emmanuel Garcia rolled a ground ball to second that looked to be a double play ball, but Garcia beat the rap at first allowing Josh Petersen to score giving the B-Mets a 1-0 lead.

A second run came home in the third with two outs. Bowman tripled off the right field wall in front of D.J. Wabick, who drove him in with a line single to right off left-handed starter Wilkins Arias. This made the score 2-0 through two and a half innings.

Trenton (14-13) tied things up in the fourth. Reegie Corona opened with a single off Coultas. Colin Curtis then followed with a second triple in as many days to drive in Corona. Then Jorge Vazquez singled to bring home Curtis and tie things up at 2-2.

In the sixth, Bowman led things off with a solo home run over the left-center field wall to put Binghamton back in front 3-2. It was Bowman's fifth of the season, driving in run number 20, both are team highs.

Vazquez stung his second home run of the series in the eighth off of recent addition Stephen Clyne. The shot curled around the foul pole on a line to even the score at 3-3, which set the stage for Gil in the ninth.

Binghamton now travels to New Hampshire for a three-game series beginning tomorrow at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium. The B-Mets have yet to name a starter, but the Fisher Cats will have and will throw RHP Rei Gonzalez (!-0, 1.70). The game is slated for a 6:35 first pitch and the radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:20 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
