Riding the Hot Hand...Jeanmar Gomez was fantastic last night against Harrisburg as he permitted only three hits while striking out five batters in seven shutout innings of work to earn his second win in as many tries for the Aeros. The native of Caracas, VZ faced the minimum three hitters four times in his seven innings, allowed just three runners to get as far as second base, and delivered a first-pitch strike to 21 of the 26 men he faced. The 21-year-old, who began the season with Class A Kinston, has allowed just one earned run and 11 hits in his last four starts spanning 25.0 innings (0.36 ERA) between Akron and Kinston, while also notching 19 strikeouts and issuing only four walks.
Snapping Turtle...CF Jose Constanza's team-high, seven-game hitting streak was snapped last night, but he still delivered a very productive night at the plate. The leadoff man, who came into the game hitting .423 (22-52) with six multi-hit games in his previous 13 outings, went 0-3 but still drew a pair of walks, beat out a potential double play to drive in a run, stole two bases, and scored three times. The speedster upped his league-leading mark to 13 stolen bases, and ranks second on the circuit with 23 runs scored. With the hitting streak coming to an end his batting average fell to .353, which is still fourth in the league.
Senatorial Command...Last night's triumph improved Akron to a perfect 7-0 against the Senators on the season. The Aeros have dominated the season-series thus far on the scoreboard, out-scoring the Senators 36-17 and have recorded their only two shutouts this season at Harrisburg's expense. In 14 games against Harrisburg last season, the Aeros and Sens spilt the series 7-7 with Harrisburg actually tallying more runs by a margin of 83-74.
Chuck is The Name...Left-hander Chuck Lofgren takes the mound today for Akron, as he looks to continue a very hot streak of starts. He is currently fourth in the Eastern League with a 1.29 ERA and has yet to allow more than four hits or one earned run in any one of his four starts this season. Additionally, he has already carried a perfect game into the fourth in one of his starts and worked six no-hit frames in another. Opposing batters are hitting a meager .137 against him on the year, and the 10 hits allowed by the "Big Swede" are the fewest by any Aeros pitcher with at least 13.0 innings pitched.
Did You Know...C Carlos Santana picked up his 22nd RBI of the season last night, moving him into a tie for fourth place in the Eastern League. He is also third in the league with six home runs and eighth with a .549 slugging percentage...RHP Vinnie Pestano remains tied for the league lead with nine saves on the season, although he has not recorded a save since April 29th...The Aeros lead the Eastern League with a 2.93 team ERA and their starters are a big reason why. Led by RHP Hector Rondon (5-0, 1.23 ERA) and Lofgren, Akron starters are 14-3 on the season with a 2.53 ERA while averaging 5.1 innings per start.
