SeaWolves Shut out Thunder 7-0 on Monday

The SeaWolves used another strong starting pitching performance as they shutout the Trenton Thunder, 7-0, on Monday afternoon at UPMC Park. The victory gave Erie the season series win over Trenton 8-6.

Erie jumped ahead in the bottom of the first against Trenton starter Rony Garcia. With two outs, Jose Azocar blasted a solo home run, his seventh of the season, for a 1-0 lead.

The 'Wolves added to the lead in the second as Cam Gibson led off and crushed a solo home run to straight away center. His fourth home run of the year made it 2-0. Josh Lester doubled with one out and came home on a Sergio Alcantara base hit for a 3-0 advantage.

The lead remained at three until the last of the eighth inning against Thunder reliever Brooks Kriske. Lester led off with a single and moved into scoring position on a one-out, Joey Morgan walk. Derek Hill hit into a fielder's choice and beat out a double play ball to keep the inning alive for Isaac Paredes. Paredes followed with a base hit to right, his third knock of the game, plating Lester for a 4-0 lead. Azocar followed with an opposite-field, three-run home run to give the SeaWolves a 7-0 lead.

Erie starter Matt Manning (8-4) was superb twirling seven scoreless frames. It was his longest outing since he went seven against Bowie on May 5. He allowed just three singles with one walk and three strikeouts.

Nolan Blackwood entered the game in the eighth and tossed two hitless innings, completing the shutout. Blackwood allowed a walk and hit a batter, earning his second save.

Garcia (2-10) took the loss for Trenton allowing three runs on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts in four innings.

The SeaWolves hit the road as they take on the Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. RHP Kyle Funkhouser (2-1, 2.04 ERA) takes the mound for Erie.
