Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves were doubled up by the Altoona Curve 10-5 on Tuesday night at Blair County Ballpark as they were dealt their second consecutive loss. The 10 runs allowed were the most given up by Erie since May 6 when they yielded 12 in a loss to Bowie.

Altoona (29-28) struck first in the bottom of the first against Erie (27-29) starter Mark Sorensen. Brock Holt led off with a double, advanced on a Starling Marte groundout and scored on a Jordy Mercer single for a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Matt Curry singled home Mercer making it 2-0 Altoona.

Altoona expanded its lead in the second. Tony Sanchez led off and walked. He moved to third on a Chris Watts double. After Sorensen retired the next two, Marte singled to left, plating Sanchez for a 3-0 Curve lead. With runners on the corners, a wild pitch scored Watts for a 4-0 Altoona lead. Mercer connected on a two-run home run, his 11th, for a 6-0 Curve lead after two.

Erie got on the board in the top of the third against Altoona starter Jeff Locke. Shawn Roof led off and bunted his way aboard. He advanced to second and stole third. With two out, Jamie Johnson was hit by a pitch, putting runners on the corners for Brandon Douglas. Douglas grounded out to short and a Mercer error allowed Roof to score making it 6-1. Justin Henry singled home Johnson cutting the Curve lead to 6-2. With the single, Henry has now reached base safely in 33 of his last 34 games.

Altoona would go ahead 7-2 in the bottom of the third when Watts connected on a two-out, solo home run to left, his third.

In the fourth, Francisco Martinez led off with his eighth double down the left field line and he moved to third on an error. Martinez scored on an Audy Ciriaco sacrifice fly to center to make it 7-3.

The Curve went back ahead by five in the fifth. Curry doubled with one out and scored on a two-out Sanchez base knock to center for an 8-3 lead.

The SeaWolves again closed the gap in the top of the seventh. Michael Rockett singled to left with one out to extend his hitting streak to seven straight games. Johnson and Douglas followed with back-to-back walks, loading the bases against reliever Tim Alderson. Alderson walked Henry with the sacks full, bringing home Rockett making it an 8-4 game. Rawley Bishop grounded out, scoring Johnson, cutting the Altoona lead down to three at 8-5.

Altoona added insurance runs in the eighth against reliever Zach Samuels. Watts reached on a one-out hit by pitch and was tripled at home by Brad Chalk. Chalk scored on a Holt single for a 10-5 lead. Erie would get no closer, falling by that final score.

Sorensen (5-3) took the loss allowing a season-high eight runs, all earned, on nine hits in 4.2 innings of work. Seven of the eight runs scored with two outs. Sorensen walked one while equaling a season-high with seven strikeouts. The loss snaps a three-game win streak for the Erie righty. It also ended a streak of five straight team wins for the ‘Wolves in Sorensen starts.

The ‘Wolves and Curve meet in the middle game of the three-game series on Wednesday night at Blair County Ballpark...7:00 First Pitch. LHP Casey Crosby (3-2, 2.82 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Bryan Morris (1-2, 2.93 ERA)
