May 23, 2023 - International League (IL)
Worcester Red Sox News Release
MOOSIC, PA - In what was a historic night on many fronts, the Worcester Red Sox (24-22) captured game one of their six-game series with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (21-25) by a 13-3 final from PNC Field on Tuesday night.
The WooSox set new season highs in homers (six) and extra-base hits (10), and Matt Dermody tossed an immaculate third inning while striking out a career-high 11 in seven innings, marking the longest outing for a WooSox starter this season.
David Hamilton hit the second pitch of the game over the right-field fence to put Worcester on top 1-0. It was his team-leading tenth homer, and the third time this year he has led off the first inning with a long ball.
Estevan Florial responded by leading off the bottom of the first with a solo shot to tie the game at one.
The WooSox erupted for six runs in the second inning, five of which scored thanks to three home runs. First, Nick Sogard belted his first Triple-A home run to put the WooSox back on top 4-1. Two batters later, Hamilton launched his second homer in as many innings to extend the lead to 5-1. Then, Niko Goodrum clubbed his fourth home run of the year over the right-field fence to make it a 6-1 game. After a walk to Wilyer Abreu, Jorge Alfaro doubled to score Abreu. It was the second time this season the WooSox hit three homers in one inning.
In the bottom of the second, RailRiders catcher Carlos Narvaez singled in a run to cut the Scranton deficit to 7-2.
Worcester left-hander Matt Dermody tossed an immaculate third inning, striking out Florial, Oswald Peraza, and Elijah Dunham on nine pitches. It was the second immaculate inning in Worcester Red Sox history. Chris Murphy threw an immaculate inning against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on September 9, 2022.
With one out and the bases empty in the fourth, Niko Goodrum cracked his second homer of the night. It was Goodrum's first multi-home run game since September 30, 2021 when he was a member of the Detroit Tigers.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre scored in the sixth when Rodolfo Duran singled in a run.
The WooSox tacked on two more in the seventh. Abreu scored on a wild pitch, and later in the inning Daniel Palka doubled in a run.
In the ninth, Ryan Fitzgerald doubled in a run. Palka crushed a 453-foot two-run homer to make it 13-3.
With their six homers tonight, the WooSox have now hit 41 long balls in May, the most in Triple-A.
It was the first six-home run game for a Red Sox Triple-A affiliate since the Pawtucket Red Sox hit six homers against the Rochester Red Wings on June 29, 2008.
Matt Dermody struck out a career-high 11 batters over seven innings. He allowed three runs and walked one. The seven-inning start was the longest for a WooSox starter this season.
The WooSox continue their series with the RailRiders tomorrow at 11:05 a.m. Radio coverage begins at 10:45 a.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon, 100.1 FM The Pike, and the rest of the WooSox Radio Network.
