Iowa Opens Series With Win Over Sounds

May 23, 2023 - International League (IL)
Iowa Cubs News Release

NASHVILLE, TN - The Iowa Cubs (26-17) and the Nashville Sounds (23-22) began their scheduled six-game series on Tuesday evening from First Horizon Park and it was the I-Cubs who took the series opener by a score of 4-1.

It didn't take long for Iowa to get on the scoreboard in this one as Darius Hill took the very first pitch of the contest over the right field fence for a leadoff home run. Hill's home run was his first of the season and put the I-Cubs out in front, 1-0.

Iowa starter Caleb Kilian took the mound and was in control for much of his outing as he held Nashville scoreless through the first four innings. The Sounds did eventually claim a run off the California kid, however, to tie up the ballgame at 1-1 in the fifth. With two outs, Payton Henry sent a deep fly ball to center field that landed on the warning track that was good for a double and Monte Harrison followed with a single up the middle to plate Henry.

The I-Cubs bats immediately responded in the following frame to reclaim the lead. Jared Young got the inning started with a single through the right side and moved into scoring position after Miguel Amaya drew a walk. Young eventually came around to score a couple batters later when Yonathan Perlaza came through with a base knock, which put Iowa back in front, 2-1.

In the seventh, Iowa added to its lead with some important insurance runs. With Hill on first after drawing a walk, Jake Slaughter stepped up to the plate and hit a two-run blast to left field to make the score 4-1. That was all the I-Cubs needed as the bullpen held the Sounds scoreless for the final innings to claim the series opener.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Caleb Kilian set a new season-high by striking out six batters on the night. He also tied his season high with another five-inning outing and improved his Triple-A recorded to 3-0.

With his two-run home run tonight, Jake Slaughter now has a total of 38 RBI on the year which ranks him sixth in the International League

Manuel Rodriguez picked up his eighth save of 2023 with a scoreless ninth inning. Rodríguez now ranks first in the International League in saves.
