Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - Stephen Scott's two-run blast in the eighth inning wasn't enough to bring back the Portland Sea Dogs (12-5, 42-44) who dropped the fifth game of the six-game series to the Somerset Patriots (9-8, 53-33) by a score of 7-3 on Saturday at Hadlock Field.
Somerset scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the second inning against Portland starter Brian Van Belle. Rodolfo Duran hit a one-out double to right field, putting himself in scoring position. Mickey Gasper stepped up to the plate and launched a two-run homer, giving the Patriots a 2-0 lead.
The Patriots brought another run in the top of the third with Van Belle still pitching. With one out, Elijah Dunham hit a solo homer to right-center. It was his 12th homer of the year and extended Somerset's advantage to 3-0. It was another solo homer in the top of the fifth that added to the score, this time by Max Burt, putting the Patriots ahead 4-0.
Two more runs came around to score in the top of the seventh inning. Jesus Bastidas singled, Austin Wells walked, and Blake Perkins singled to load the bases. Rodolfo Duran knocked in Bastidas with a base hit to right, bringing the score to 5-0. Mickey Gasper hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Wells, giving the Patriots a 6-0 lead.
Burt hit his second home run of the night in the top of the eighth, tallying another run for the Somerset lead, 7-0. The Sea Dogs offense woke up in the bottom of the eight, bringing in two runs. Alex Binelas singled with one out and Scott blasted a two-run shot to right-center, cutting into the Patriots lead, 7-2.
Portland plated the final run of the night in the bottom of the ninth. David Hamilton led off with a base hit and stole second. Christian Koss drove him in with a double to center, making it a 7-3 game. That would be all the offense that the Sea Dogs could muster, dropping the fifth game of the series 7-3.
Sean Boyle (7-4, 4.30 ERA) worked through 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out nine batters in his seventh win of the season. Van Belle (4-2, 3.82 ERA) tossed 5.0 innings, surrendering four runs on eight hits, walking one, and striking out eight in his second loss of the year.
The Sea Dogs and Patriots play the finale of a six-game series with a 1:00 PM first pitch at Hadlock Field. Yusniel Padron-Atiles (0-0, 0.00 ERA) takes the mound for Portland and will face Somerset RHP Randy Vaquez (0-3, 3.06 ERA).
