Portland Sea Dogs News Release

BACK IN THE WIN COLUMN - The Sea Dogs evened up the series at two games apiece against the Patriots with a 5-0, shutout win. The first three frames were an all-out pitcher's duel. Portland starter Bryan Mata allowed just two hits over the first three innings, keeping Somerset scoreless over that time. On the other side, Patriots starter Mitch Spence was perfect, setting Portland down in order through the first nine batters. The Sea Dogs offense exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with Spence still on the mound. David Hamilton got things started with a one-out single and Christian Koss blasted a two-run homer to center, giving the Sea Dogs a 2-0 lead. Izzy Wilson walked and stole second base. Tyreque Reed made it consecutive walks and Kole Cottam drove in Wilson with a single, making it a 3-0 lead. Cameron Cannon beat out an infield single, plating Tyreque Reed on the play, capping off a four-run inning with a 4-0 lead. Both offenses went quiet until the eighth inning when Portland plated an insurance run against Somerset reliever Barrett Loseke. Hamilton collected a one-out single and stole second. He preceded to steal third, where the throw from Patriots catcher Austin Wells bounced into

left, scoring Hamilton to make it a 5-0 lead. Brendan Nail entered for the ninth, putting away the Patriots and tying the series with a 5-0 victory.

KEEPING IT CONSISTENT - The Sea Dogs were swept by the Hartford Yard Goats in a series that took place from June 7 to June 12. The losing streak reached seven games, ending on June 14 against the Reading Fightin Phils. Since this losing streak, Portland has not lost more than two games consecutively. Since June 14, Portland has put together an 18-9 record, including a 12-4 start to the second half of Eastern League play.

SLINGSHOT, ENGAGED - David Hamilton and Anthony Volpe, the top-two base stealers in the Eastern League, are playing at Hadlock Field this week. Coming into this week, Volpe led with 35 steals compared to Hamilton's 31. In the three games played in this series, Volpe is 0-for-1 on steal attempts. Over Hamilton's four games played, he is 5-for-5 in steal attempts, including a three-steal game on Friday. Hamilton now sits alone with the lead in steals with 36, one ahead of Volpe who has 35.

KOSS KEEPS CRUSHING - Christian Koss has been a key piece in Portland's lineup this season. He currently sits in fourth place in the Eastern League in RBI with 52, trailing Erie's Quincy Nieporte (55), Hartford's Aaron Schunk (55), and Binghamton's Ronny Mauricio (54). The start of the second half hasn't slowed him down either, as Koss is hitting .300 (15-for-50), with three doubles, two homers, 10 RBI, and 11 runs scored.

THIS DAY IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - July 16, 2016 - Jacob Dahlstrand earned the win in his Double-A debut, as Portland beat New Hampshire 7-3 at Hadlock Field. Cody Decker hit his 6th homer of the year and Mauricio Dubon went 3-for-4, 2 RBI.

PITCHING MATCHUP - With the series tied 2-2, the Sea Dogs turn to RHP Brian Van Belle for Saturday's start. Van Belle is 4-1 with a 3.21 ERA in five appearances for the Sea Dogs this season. He last started 7/10 at Binghamton and tossed 7.0 innings allowing three hits while striking out five. He did not issue a walk. ‚¬Å
