Erie SeaWolves News Release
The Erie SeaWolves fended off a late comeback from the Binghamton Rumble Ponies for a 9-7 victory on Saturday at UPMC Park. The SeaWolves have taken four of the first five games of the homestand for their third consecutive series win to open the second half.
Erie's bats came alive in the first inning. Daniel Cabrera had a leadoff walk off of Jose Chacin. Andre Lipcius moved Cabrera to third with a double. Quincy Nieporte reached on a fielder's choice before Wenceel Perez smoked a two-out, two-run triple. It was his team-leading fifth three-bagger of the season.
Dane Myers followed suit with an RBI single. Myers swiped second base and was driven in by an Andrew Navigato single. Navigato stole his fourth base of the series and advanced to third on a throwing error from catcher Nick Meyer. Gage Workman lined an RBI double to plate Navigato. Eduardo Valencia, in his Double-A at-bat, hit an RBI single to give the SeaWolves a 6-0 lead.
Austin Bergner received the no-decision. He tossed four shutout frames, allowing one hit and three walks while striking out six batters.
Erie tacked on three runs in the fifth. Parker Meadows greeted Hunter Parsons with a leadoff double. Nieporte walked and Perez drove in Meadows with an RBI two-bagger. Andrew Navigato brought in Nieporte with an RBI fielder's choice, but Perez was thrown out at third on a 5-2-5 putout. Workman then laced his fourth triple of the year to plate Navigato and put Erie ahead, 9-0.
Binghamton got on the board in the sixth. Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio began the frame with back-to-back singles against Bubba Derby. Jeremy Vasquez hit into an 8-5-3-5-4 double play as Mauricio was caught in a run down and Baty tagged up to advance to third. Zach Ashford poked an RBI double to cut the deficit to 9-1.
The Rumble Ponies added three runs in the seventh. Wyatt Young had a one-out single off of Joe Navilhon. Luke Ritter singled Young to second before Baty scorched a three-run homer over the left field fence to make it a 9-4 game.
Binghamton cut the deficit to 9-5 in the eighth. Ashford collected a one-out single in the eighth against Chavez Fernander and Cody Bohanek drove in Ashford with an RBI double.
The Rumble Ponies continued to rally in the ninth. Baty reached base for the fifth time in the game with a one-out walk against Yaya Chentouf. Mauricio singled Baty to second before Vasquez brought home Baty with a base hit. Ashford singled home Mauricio to put the go-ahead run at the plate. Chentouf held down the fort and struck out Bohanek to seal the victory.
Derby (2-0) earned the win. He tossed two innings, giving up one run on three hits, walking one, and striking out.
Chacin (0-7) was tagged with the loss. He yielded five runs in 0.2 innings.
