Portland Sea Dogs News Release
PORTLAND, Maine - For the first time in their post All Star game schedule the Altoona Curve dropped a series, stumbling in two of three and falling to the Portland Sea Dogs (AA - Boston Red Sox) 8-1 in the finale at Hadlock Field on Thursday afternoon.
Prior to losing the series, the Curve had won three and drawn even in a pair of the five total series the team had played since July 16.
Starter Derek Hankins was touched up for eight runs and 10 hits over six innings. Of the 10 hits Hankins surrendered, six went for extra bases which included five doubles and a two-run homer by Ryan Kalish.
Altoona (45-67) was only able to muster six hits, including one from Miles Durham who extended his hitting streak 14 games, the longest such streak by a Curve player this year. The 14-gamer also ties for the longest in Durham's career (accomplished the feat in 2008 with the Hickory Crawdads).
Altoona plated their only run of the game in the eighth inning when Jeff Corsaletti scored on a throwing error by Portland (53-57) third baseman Jorge Jimenez.
With the Curve loss, the Curve "Road to Savings" plan remains at $1 off Grandstand and Terrace level seating for Altoona's Thursday, August 13 game against Portland at Blair County Ballpark.
The Altoona Curve will open a three-game series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (AA - Toronto Blue Jays). RHP Tim Alderson (7-1, 3.33), who was recently acquired from the San Francisco Giants for INF Freddy Sanchez on July 29 will make his second start in a Curve uniform. Alderson will be opposed by LHP Luis Perez (7-9, 3.75). Air time on flagship station ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and Curve Radio Network affiliates begins at 6:50 p.m. with the Marzoni's In the Zone Pre-game show.
NOTES: ** LHP Daniel Moskos is expected to come off the Disabled List prior to Saturday's game vs. New Hampshire as he is listed as the probable starter.
** Former Curve RHP Sean Smith who spent the majority of the 2009 season with the Curve will start for New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon. Smith was dealt by Pittsburgh to the Toronto organization for future considerations on July 30.
** Should Durham extend his hitting streak to 15 games, he would rank tied for third all-time with four other players for the longest hitting streak in franchise history.
** Pedro Alvarez had a pair of hits (2-for-4) in the loss. It's the 13th multi-hit game for Alvarez in the 37 total games he's played with Altoona.
