Chesapeake Baysox News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Brandon Erbe tossed 8.0 no-hit innings as the Baysox rolled over New Hampshire 7-1 Thursday night in Manchester. The right-hander allowed three walks and struck out five, earning his third win of the season while the Baysox move to within 2.0 games of second place in the Southern Division. Reliever Jim Hoey came on in the ninth, but New Hampshire struck for three hits and pushed a run across to break-up the Baysox no-hit bid.
The Baysox offense jumped out to a three-run lead in the top of the first inning against Fisher Cats starter Adrian Martin. Doubles by left fielder Jonathan Tucker and center fielder Danny Figueroa put runners on second and third with nobody out. Third baseman Paco Figueroa brought home Tucker with an RBI groundout, and Danny Figueroa came across on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Eric Crozier. A single by second baseman Miguel Abreu extended the inning, and he came around to score on a double by right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion.
The night belonged to Erbe, as the Baltimore native retired the first eight batters he faced before allowing a two-out walk to Bryan Kervin in the third inning. After a one out walk to David Cooper in the fourth, he retired the next ten batters in a row before heading into the bottom of the eighth inning with the no-hitter still intact.
Brian Jeroloman drew a leadoff walk to start the eighth inning, but was quickly erased on a 4-6-3 double play by the Baysox defense. A fly out to center field by Jonathan Diaz ended the inning, as Erbe departed after one of the best outings of his young career.
It is not the first time the Baysox right-hander has shown the same flashes of dominance in his young career. In 2007, Erbe tossed six or more no-hit innings twice as a member of the Frederick Keys, including a 7.0 inning, nine strikeout performance against Wilmington on June 11, 2008. On August 5, 2008 he held the Salem Red Sox hitless through 6.0 innings, striking out seven and walking three.
Erbe also had plenty of run support, as the Baysox struck for a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth innings against the New Hampshire bullpen. Abreu drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh inning to push a run across, his first un-intentional walk since June 28, giving the Baysox infielder his 40th RBI of the season. Designated hitter Dave Krynzel plated another run on a sacrifice fly later in the inning, and Crozier capped off the scoring in the eighth with a two-run single to put the Baysox ahead 7-0.
The Fisher Cats offense finally came alive in the ninth, as Todd Donovan laced a one-out single off Jim Hoey to break up the no-hit bid. Adam Calderone singled to put men on the corners, and Brad Emaus followed with an RBI single to put New Hampshire on the board. Cooper struck out swinging for the second out of the inning, but Hoey issued a two-out walk to Darin Mastroianni to load the bases. Manager Brad Komminsk went to left-hander Chad Thall, who induced Jeroloman to ground out to end the game and close the door and give the Baysox their 60th win of the season.
The Baysox will now travel to Portland to begin a three-game set with the Sea Dogs. RHP Tim Bascom (2-4, 3.67 ERA) takes the hill for the Baysox, going up against RHP Blake Maxwell (3-7, 5.67 ERA) for Portland. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
