Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
VAL-D'OR, QC --- The Saint John Sea Dogs turned in one of their strongest performances of 2010-11 on Friday night, annihilating the Val-d'Or Foreurs by a score of 7-3 at the Air Creebec Centre in improving to 13-3-0-1 on the season. Saint John dominated all aspects of play in laying claim to a lopsided victory, outshooting Val-d'Or 32-16 on the evening while striking once on the power play and twice short-handed.
Stanislav Galiev (2), Jonathan Huberdeau, Mike Thomas, Gabriel Bourret, Zack Phillips, and Simon Després all found the back of the net for the Sea Dogs in the highly-impressive road effort, with Jonathan Hazen (2) and Alexandre Touchette both scoring goals for the Foreurs. Between the pipes, veteran net minder Frédéric Piché (13 saves) picked up his seventh win of the year while, at the other end of the ice, François Tremblay and Jacob Chouinard combined to stop 25 shots in a losing effort for the home side. Saint John struck first on Friday as second-year sniper Zack Phillips extended his goal scoring streak to four games midway through the first period, charging hard to the net and burying his tenth of the year on a bullet of a one-timer set up nicely by import winger Tomas Jurco. Gabriel Bourret then put the visitors up 2-0 at the 12:59 mark of the opening frame, rifling home a loose puck from just inside the slot area to bring about an abrupt end to a lengthy scramble in Val-d'Or's zone.
The Sea Dogs took a 3-0 lead courtesy of Team Captain Mike Thomas, who accepted a pass from Danick Gauthier on the fly into enemy territory and hammered a slap shot to the back of Val-d'Or's net in the 30th minute of play. Thomas' man-down marker brought an end to Chounard's night, as François Tremblay took over goaltending duties for the hosts near the midway point of the match.
A spectacular short-handed goal by sophomore scoring sensation Jonathan Huberdeau put Saint John up by four a moment later. After taking a pass from Steven Anthony near the Val-d'Or blue line, the 17-year-old offensive dynamo stick-handled around a Foreurs defender prior to getting tangled up in front of his opponents' net; exhibiting superhuman dexterity, Huberdeau proceeded to slide the puck through his legs with incredible fluidity as he made a full 360-degree turn prior to deftly depositing his twelfth tally of the year across the home team's goal line.
After Jonathan Hazen scored to briefly reduce the Foreurs' deficit to three, Washington Capitals prospect Stanislav Galiev netted the fifth goal of the evening for Saint John, banging home a rebound produced by a Steven Anthony snap shot to improve his 2010-11 goals total to six. Simon 'Big Horse' Després then gave the visiting squad from south western New Brunswick a five-goal advantage 17:57 into the middle frame, ripping a wrist shot past Tremblay from the upper slot to make the second goal of his season of the power play variety.
Stanislav Galiev put his team up by an unconverted touchdown in the opening minute of period number three, knocking a loose puck past a sprawling Tremblay to record his second offensive strike of the evening. A well-placed wrist shot off the stick of Jonathan Hazen then made the score 7-2 in Saint John's favour at the 11:22 mark of regulation's closing stanza, with Alexandre Touchette further reducing the Foreurs' deficit 5:26 later. That would be as close as Val-d'Or would get however, as the Sea Dogs cruised to victory from there on in, ultimately taking the decision by a margin of four.
Up next for the Port City's major junior squad is a Saturday night showdown with Rouyn-Noranda at Iamgold Arena. The puck drops at 8:30pm Atlantic Time as Saint John looks to pick up their fifth straight win at the Huskies' expense.
