Sea Dogs Deal Thunder Another Big Loss

(Portland, ME) - The Trenton Thunder (40-30) were blitzed for the second straight night by the Portland Sea Dogs (25-43), falling 11-4 in front of 5,107 fans at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine. In game two of the three-game set, Jose Gil drove in a pair of runs for the second straight night and Corban Joseph added three hits to stay locked-in at the plate. Trenton has now lost four of the first five games on the nine-game trip, the season's longest road swing.

The trouble started for the Thunder in the bottom of the first when starting pitcher Alan Horne, making his first appearance in competitive baseball since August of 2009, was unable to record an out. The righty left after walking five and gave way to Craig Heyer, who inherited a bases loaded, no out situation with three runs already home. Heyer limited the damage and only allowed one run to come in on a sacrifice fly, but the Thunder trailed 4-0.

Portland would not take their foot off of the gas pedal and took a 7-0 lead with them into the top of the seventh. That's when Corban Joseph got the Thunder on the board with his two-out, run-scoring single to drive home his twenty ninth run of the season. Trenton added two runs in the eighth and another in the ninth, but the team's pitching staff could not keep up. In the end, the Sea Dogs had out-matched the Thunder to a tune of 11-4.

In the first five games of this nine-game road trip, the Thunder have lost four times and have surrendered 49 runs. The loss also marks the team's seventh in nine contests dating back to a June 12 loss at Waterfront Park to the Binghamton Mets.

The Thunder will try to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Portland Sea Dogs Thursday night at 6:00 PM at Hadlock Field. Trenton will send LHP Manny Banuelos (2-1, 3.49) to the mound, while Portland will turn to RHP Chris Balcom-Miller (1-2, 3.31). Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and on trentonthunder.com.
