Red Hot 'Wolves Win Fourth Straight

The red hot SeaWolves equaled their longest winning streak of the season of four straight with a 3-1 victory over the Reading Phillies on Wednesday night at First Energy Stadium.

The Phillies took their first lead of the series in the bottom of the first against Erie starter Jay Voss. With two outs, Michael Spidale drew a two-out walk and stole second. Matt Rizzotti doubled home Spidale for a 1-0 Reading lead.

The SeaWolves tied the game in the top of the fourth against Reading starter J.C. Ramirez. Jamie Johnson led off with a double and moved into scoring position on a Gustavo Nunez sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Francisco Martinez picked up his 34th RBI with a base hit, scoring Johnson, tying the game at 1-1.

Erie took its first lead of the game in the top of the eighth. With two outs, Johnson successfully reached on a drag bunt putting the go-ahead run on base. Nunez followed and put the SeaWolves ahead with a lined single to the alley in left, bringing home Johnson for a 2-1 lead. Justin Henry followed and grounded to the second baseman. On the play, Paco Figueroa booted the ball allowing Nunez to score from second, giving Erie a 3-1 edge.

The two-run lead would prove to be more than enough for the Erie bullpen. Rob Waite worked a 1-2-3 eighth with two strikeouts and Chance Ruffin earned his ninth save tossing a perfect ninth.

Voss (3-2) earned his second win in his last three starts going seven innings, allowing a run on four hits with a walk and six strikeouts. At one point in the game, Voss retired 14 consecutive hitters. He has struck out 20 over his last three starts.

Erie is now two-games above .500 at 36-24 which equals their high-water mark for games above .500 this season.

The SeaWolves look for a series sweep and to extend their win streak to a season-long five on Thursday night against the Phillies at First Energy Stadium.7:05 First Pitch. Righty Mark Sorensen (6-4, 5.40 ERA) takes the mound for Erie and looks to rebound from a tough start his last time out against RHP Tyler Cloyd (0-1, 2.50 ERA).
